Reminder: Check your spare

I guess it's been a while since I checked it because my 60psi spare donut only had 15psi. Oops.

Does anyone else get nervous putting that much air in a tire, hearing the compressor struggle? I guess I've seen too many accident videos of tires exploding to not worry about it. I'm pretty sure 60psi is nothing for a tire that is designed for it but it still makes me sweat doing so.

I'm amazed nobody does a kind-of extension hose. One that you could connect to the tyre valve in the spare, and run the hose to a wheel arch or under the rear bumper etc. That way, when you're going around the cars checking or topping up your tyres you could quickly check your spare without having to empty your boot.

The coolest spare I've seen is on the Pacifica. It's a deflated temp use spare, comes with a compressor/deflator. Put it on, fill it up, when you take it off, flip the switch to deflate and it sucks all the air out and you put it back in the nook in the wall.

There was something similar on '67 Firebirds. Their trunk was very small so the temporary use spare tire was flat and a small diameter. I don't recall how you were meant to blow it up.

Spare tires are definitely a neglected item . I'm guilty of it myself . This will be a reminder to go check both of mine .

I was with a friend going to SF and one of the tires on his Honda Fit failed. We put the spare on - it was flat. Thankfully just a block from a gas station with a working, free air pump.

So yeah, check those spares If you have them. Neither of my cars do

We carry a bike pump in the cars, as the spare never get checked until we need them, so then I pump it up, and put it on.

I have an automatic spare reminder aka tpms alert. The spare keeps losing air and trigger the sensors due to rusty rim(aluminum) on the 2012 Toyota Highlander. Walmart tried to clean and seal but still have a slow leak. I probably have to replace the rim and tires to stop it. This Highlander came from Canada thus the rust.

I check mine normally about every 6 months. Same time I take the jump starter out and make sure it's plugged in/topped off. I carry the Harbor Freight Inflator in each car anyway if it a bit low. There is room in the bag to carry a plug kit in it also. It does get to get 60psi if a little slower. Goes on sale frequently and I think around black Friday was like $20.
