I am looking to replace my old Hoover vacuum cleaner. Its probably like 10 years old already. It is the bag kind and it seems like its not as powerful compared to when I got it new. It is also very loud, I say its loud enough where I can barely talk over it. This one has a 7.4 amp motor, I see most of the newer ones have like 10-12amp motor.

So I want to get one thats doesn't make too much noise. I'm not sure if the bagless kind is a good choice. I have a small handheld vacuum cleaner and noticed that when the air filter thing gets plugged the suction power is reduced. I prefer the upright vacuum style. It will be used for both carpet and bare floors, I also will use it to vacuum the car as well. Looking to spend up to $150.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have a Dyson, which I think I spent $200 or $300 for the full kit. Can't remember, also I know is that it is the best vaccum I've ever owned, and is also very quite.

I just bought a eureka bagless from big lots of all places. It was refurbished in a plain brown box. I seen a similar model new selling at walmart for around $200. I paid $45 for it.

I happen to like it, but you have to pay close attention to the instructions. There are 3 or 4 compartments to empty or keep clean, and 1 hepa filter that needs to be replaced yearly.

About once a month, I pull the 3 washable filters out of it, and rinse them off in the laundry tub.

If you don't do this, they get plugged up in short order.

I like the vacuum, it does a nice job, but I think a bagged cleaner might work just as well, and be easier. Buying bags is a little simpler than cleaning 4 filters once a month.

Mom always swore by Electrolux until Dad put in the central vac system for her.

Problem is, Electrolux has been cheapened down like everything else. They're nothing more than a overpriced Eureka anymore... (they also make Eureka vacuums)... so I bought a Eureka.

Electrolux also makes lawn mowers and kitchen appliances now as well...

I can't offer a suggestion for a quite vacuum cleaner.

I got tired of changing bags on an old Hoover upright we had and was fascinated with the Dyson....so...I bought one 3 years ago.

Although I paid more for it than what you want to pay for a vacuum, it is by far the best vacuum I have ever used. Only drawback to it is that you can't get under some furniture because of the head design.

It picks up more pet hair and dirt than any vacuum I have ever used...including a friend's Orek that I repaired a bad switch on and they are supposed to be good vacuums.

Don't know of any that are quiet though.

I like my Kirby. I got it at a thrift sale for 25 dollars. Heavy as a tank but works like a champ and easily replaceable parts. Not that loud either. Seems that the cheaper vacuums often have louder motors.

Dyson = $400 hunk o' plastic. There's a reason why even Big Lots has them now.

Go to a real vac shop. Buy Riccar or Simplicity (Made in USA).

I would have to say the Dyson is junk. We have two of them, one the yellow model and the other the purple animal model. They are both in the shed. After many repairs on both we just gave up on them.

I've got the purple (Vikings model) Dyson, and it's been great.
Has one slight problem that I have to get looked at, but it's well-designed.
We only got it 'cause it was on a good sale, and I was hesitant, but it's done well.

Well, about 12 years ago my parents bought us a Kirby G5, that was well over $1k and still works to this day, though a little worse for the wear, but what can you expect from 12 years of hard use? Anyway my grandmother bought a Dyson Ball from Best buy over the summer and she loves it, she has a bad back and the dyson was alot better for her, after her old Eureka's motor bearings died.

I vote for Oreck. It's pretty darned quiet compared to the Hoovers that I owned. I finally got rid of my Hoover's after my dad retired from there.

Actually I've had 2 Orecks. The first one was lost in a divorce and I went out the next day and bought another--That was 4 years ago.

+1^ for Oreck. We're on our second one but it was an upgrade. Gave away the old one to some friends. I don't try to listen to the tv over it but the way it cleans u don't hear it long.

I was very impressed with the Kirby the salesman tried to offload to us at a ridiculous price (even after talking him down a bunch). Built like a tank, but there's just something about door-to-door sales.....

I used to know the number one Kirby salesman, he lived in a huge house in Tampa. Each Kirby sold pays commissions to DOZENS of people. A bit like Amway.

We have used Dyson since they came out, both in our home and biz. Our very first one is still working well, NEVER a bag or filter, not even a belt! We have eight!

Possibly the best vac ever. Go on Overstock.com for some deals.

I dont like bagless. Getting the can clean is a real mess and puts you in contact with more junk.

We like miele, very quiet, and you can turn the power down if you like, to suit the job. ou can set it up with a HEPA filter to clean well and ensure pure air.

Bags are the racket. A manufacturer will practically GIVE you a vacuum just so they can sell you bags for years.

And just for comparison (I like Miele) the Dyson's exhausted air is CLEANER than HEPA.

I've seen the Oreck vacuums sold at Target. There is one that comes with a canister vacuum which might be useful for vacuuming the car.

I change the bag on my Hoover about every month, while its not expensive I know the cost will add up. Had to change the brush belt a few times. The way its designed, it puts a lot of stress on the brush because its really pulling on it. And over the years I noticed the bracket that holds the brush is starting to crack.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
