I live in New England, and I drive a 2004 Mazda3 2.3 with about 85k on it..

Just finished up a major tuneup with all fluids, suspension, everything to make it go another 85k. Now I need to pick an oil.

Today, for $4/qt, I can get 5w20 Castrol Syntec or for $4/qt I can get either 5w20 or 0w20 Quaker State Ultimate Durability SM from Big Lots.. I want to stock up at this price, but what is the concensus, what's the better oil to run?

Thanks!

Well, if you're looking at the same Black Friday ad that I'm looking at, the sale on the Castrol Syntec ended at 11am, so QSUD at Big Lots would be your only choice.

I made sure to get the Castrol this morning just in case, but it looks like the Quaker is getting more votes. I gather these are all Group III oils?

Syntec is okay, unless it's 0W-30 GC, in which case it's very good.
I'm using some Syntec 5W-30 right now, since its's been in the stash for around five years and I wanted to use it up.
Check out the PDSs for both, and you'll probably choose QSUD.
I would.
Both of these are Grp III oils.
SOPUS tells us that directly, while Castrol makes you read between the lines.

Actually if you check out the MSDS, QSUD appears to be PAO/Grp. IV.

LOL: I know this is getting crazy.

In the real world, I feel my Altima runs better on Syntec 5w30 and noticeably worse on QSUD. My Altima ran THE worst on Amsoil ASL 5w30. Do I think it made a lick of difference in wear or performance...no. Not unless I lived in a frozen tundra, then I would pick Grp. IV.

Moral is, pick what is on sale, pick for a specific purpose, or pick what your butt dyno likes.

SOPUS has said that PP and Ultra are Grp IIIs.
It is written here in the Pennzoil Q&A.
I doubt that QSUD is a Grp IV, although some grades could have some PAO or ester content.
If my cars ran more happily on Syntec, I'd use it.
The '99 Accord seems happy enough with it.
Have you tried Synpower?
Very smooth and quiet in our Forester, as was the VR1 I ran before the Synpower.
There are non-metallic adds in all oils.
What are they, and what effect do they have?
