Purple Royal + 3.7 colorado... good or bad?

Hi everyone, I just bought an 07 colorado with a I5 3.7 engine 4X2. The truck has 40K on it and I mainly use it to go back and forth from school and tow bikes around a couple times a week.. nothing too crazy. I drive around the speed limits and do like to get on it from time to time.
I was thinking about going with some purple royal and a wik filter.. Does anybody have any opinions on this? I wanted to try royal purple because I always hear good things about it and i figured id give it a shot...

Royal purple is an excellent oil but IMO there are oils that offer the same or better performance for the same price or cheaper.

Do your research on this site before you settle on an oil.

i'd personally save your money and not buy Royal Purple. You'd be better served by using mainstream oils like Pennzoil Platinum, Pennzoil Ultra, Mobil 1, Synpower etc while not putting a dent in your wallet($8+ per quart) compared to $4-5 per quart.

I was gonna say that in my post but I didn't want to seem biased and didn't want to start a war about Royal Purple.

Yeah you might want to buy some Advil or Tylenol before choosing your oil.

Seriously though, in 99% of vehicles proper oil changes using the weight specified in your manual at an OCI no longer than specified for your driving conditions as per your manual or Oil Life Monitor as well as proper vehicle maintenance like Plugs/wires and other fluids will give you more miles that you ever wanted regardless of oil choice.

We are just geeks and want the best, just because... And that's ok to do... But don't get infected with the BITOG virus.

haha +1 on the tylenol.

I guess a good question is the viscosity.. I can do some research on the oil brand or whatever but I was never able to get the viscosity down.
Im in Arizona... 120F. whats best if i do decide to run synthetic? There are so many weights out there and I have no idea what would be best for this kind of weather conditions..

Follow the owners manual which says 5w30?

If so, don't worry about using a 10w30.

Actually if you look around for oil specials you can sometimes find Royal Purple at around the same price as the "mainstream" oils as I just found such a sale at Shucks / Oreilly auto parts they had 5 quarts of Royal Purple and a K&N Filter for $39.95

Try some Pennzoil Ultra...pass on the Royal Purple. In my opinion, the Ultra has a better add-pack than the RP. Just my $0.02

I apologize if I came off biased(not my intention), but me just making it known that even the lower priced synthetics can offer good protection and longevity that he may be seeking.

Also, keep in mind both NAPA and Carquest brand filters are WIX. So often you can find a sale at either. Both have grades, napa has standard/nascar/gold and CarQuest has red/blue. The best are really good and still around six bucks.

Oil, nothing wrong with RP except the price. You can pickup M1, Pennzoil Platinum, Syntec, Edge... whatever any day of the week and they'll do as well. You can't go wrong with any of those 5w30 oils. In Synthetic passenger car oils there isn't really a lot of difference between most 5-30 and 10-30's, so don't worry about that.

I've compared the numbers for Royal Purple and it's not a bad oil but when you look at the performance-per-dollar, it's near the bottom. I guess if they have a sale on it you'll do okay, but there's far better for the money.

If you want to make the jump to synthetic, Shell Rotella T6, Mobil 1 Turbodiesel Truck, and Pennzoil Ultra are solid choices. All are readily available and reasonably priced.

Id pass on the royal purple. Its just too expensive. If you can get it on sale, buy it! Otherwise Pennzoil Ultra is right up your alley. Wix filters are fantastic. They are more expensive than the Purolator PureONE and not any better either. If you can find them in your area or at a local Kmart, buy um up.

Congrats on your purchase. Your truck still has the balance of the 5yr/100k warranty. Buy any oil approved by GM. You don't know what kind of maintenance the truck had before you (maybe you do with a carfax)and you don't want any trouble now. Unlikely you will have an oil related problem but keep your receipt for the oil/filter purchase.

Cost-wise, there's not really a reason to run boutique oils on a run-of-the-mill car on a run-of-the-mill maintenance interval. They are only practical for extended drain or rare applications (extensive track use, etc). For all the rest, any oil on the shelf with the latest starburst will do.

about a decade ago I used to run (and buy when on sale) Royal Purple in my 95 Impala SS /5.7L V8 / All my used oil analysis with that oil were stellar as I ran it around a 1 year OCi and 12K. The wear metals and TBN were great and better than the other synthetics at the time. So I had figured for the cost the performance was at the top. Now my 95 SS is in storage and saving it for my son, so no more Royal Purple for that car for awhile.
