Ah yes, truly a sin. What should the owner's penance be? But also a testament to the inherent durability of the Chevy small block engine. We had one at work that was driven for some time while 3 quarts low on oil. The only symptom was a fluctuating oil pressure gauge and it did not kill the engine in the van.

Kinda puts the lie to the idea that PP doesn't darken..

PP= Purolator Premium, not Penzzoil Platinum.

Ya got me..From the headline, I thought the Purolator was the filter, and the oil was PP. Well, it COULDA been PP oil..

Yes, PP = Premium Plus, not Pennzoil Platinum. Cheap 10w30 dino was used for this 4 Year/+40K Miles OCI.

Once you clean that motor it will smoke like LTV Steel in the Summer. That sludge is holding the whole thing together trust me. Throw some ST syn in there and see what happens..

I don't necessarily buy into that conjecture. I've seen too many cases where a properly cleaned engine didn't smoke afterwards.

If it's not smoking now ..the worst thing it could be is valve seals..or so I reason. Any ring wear would surely show itself now. The power level of the thing must be up to par

A few bottles of Auto-Rx and half a dozen cheap filters changed out a few times during the treatment and he could be in good shape.

The ignorant are frequently spared these things. It's the informed that suffer for violating sensible maintenance tenets.

One thing I should add is that the engine has/had a bad oil leak. I'm guessing a quart was added every 1,000-2,000 miles, so in a sense, it was getting pseudo oil changes over the interval.

Note above, I said "has/had a bad oil leak". The reason I'm unsure is due to the fact that this filter was easily unscrewed by hand upon attempting removal. With the gasket old and brittle, I'm not so sure that much of the oil that was leaking wasn't coming out from the oil filter gasket/mount interface.

ARX on this one, would surely be interesting to keep up with. A shovel might be of service, as well...

Hey, no worries...it's not my engine.

It took me almost a year to convince this ninny that he needed to actually change the oil and filter, not just to keep topping it off. I then used the internals of his filter to rub his nose in it just as some people do when a dog does his doodie inside the house. It seems to have worked.
