I'm breaking in a new engine, and after an initial change at 300~ miles, I changed again at 1700.

Initially it had a Subaru OEM filter for the first 300, and then I got a PureOne for the second change. Everything has been mostly good, but when I pulled the filter off today, I noticed the element seems loose inside the canister. This doesn't seem right in my mind. I emailed the contact on the Purolator website, and we'll see what they say.

I had noticed the car taking a little bit longer than I'd like to quiet down upon initial cranking, but I just assumed that it was due to the rebuild. I really hope I didn't get a bad filter immediately after rebuilding the motor. ugh.

Car is a 2003 Subaru WRX, and I'm running Rotella T 10w30.

Yep, I've still got it - not being unreasonable about this, if you make a zillion filters you're going to have some failure rate.

Which oil filter are you using now ? I just bought a dozen PureOne oil filters for my S2000, LS400 from AAP, I hope that I don't have any bad filter.

im not so sure if you send the filter to them and there is a problem they will admit to it...I always shake them, smell them blow into them to check the anti drainback valve and check to see if they were "handled"
HaHa funny and maybe a little crazy but true!

Seems like this is getting more common. I have P1's and use them but I am not a blind fan. I have cut Honda and nissan OEM plus most major mid tier filters and P1's without question have the "most pliable" shells. I am not in love with them and never have been, but people blast you if you speak negatively about P1's on BITOG. I learned early to

I seriously doubt Purolator will do/say anything about the filter without seeing/examining the actual filter.

As for the impression given above that issues/problems is somehow unique to Purolator, if one's been reading here, recently there have been several complaints about other respected brands/filters. A couple recent threads here about Wix and even one on the the much lauded ~$9 Xtended Guard posted in the auto gen topics. My response has been consistent on the subject with all, not just Purolator. They are mass produced and errors can and do occur. Somehow don't see the same response from same regarding P1, ie. getting more common. IME, hadn't noticed it getting more common, just the comment from same being more common.

As for the alleged Puro thinner can, this thread seems to indicate otherwise. My own recent measurement of a P1 can shows it to be .016 (have pic) with the texture removed. That said, in 40yrs diy never had a filter can from any maker rupture/fail in pc use, which is the real world measure.

To the topic, as suggested, a phone call to Puro and/or sending said filter, might give better results.

What are you saying! Get off this forum!!!
Heehee.

I know, it's the same with a lot of products. P1's are pretty good for the money, I think, but not perfect. Of course they all have a few get out that don't work right from the factory, fortunately, it is pretty rare anything fails in a way to cause damage.

I'm using a Fram ToughGuard now that I had lying on the shelf. Was going to be another P1, but I'm a little gun shy now.

I drove it this morning for the first time since the change, and it's a ton better, unless that's just placebo. (I don't have a real gauge since this is just my daily driver.. but I might have to rectify that.)

Cold cranking specifically- no piston slap noise on startup, and the oil pressure dummy light flashes briefly instead of staying on for 3-4 cranks of the starter.
