Valvoline vs PureONE filters

So I'm still about a month off of changing my oil, however I've already bought some Valvoline Durablend 10W-30 for my 05 I4 camry. Today I went looking for filters. I was going to buy one each of Valvoline, PureONE and the OEM Denso filter, however the toyota shop was shut today.

The valvoline part number is VO 41 and the pureone PL14477.

So there are a number of differences between the valvoline and PureONE filters.

The valvoline weighs in at 240 grams, pureone @ 198 grams. Noticeable weight difference.

THe valvoline came with a shirnk-wrapped end and sealed box while the pureone was just sitting in the box.


The central outlet area of the filters indise the cartridge: pureone seems to have machined circular holes with a seam running vertically. valvoline seems to be tiny slits cut into a metal sheet then punched out to have outlets perpendiular to the plane of the sheet. the valvoline seam runs diagonally.

both have rubber type anti drain back valves visible, I know the pureone is silicone, not sure about the valvoline.

they both seem the same diameter as the OEM denso, but both seem shorter. (can anyone confirm this?) the pureone is slightly longer.

I notice a spring at the back and in the inside centre of the valvoline, however the pureone only has a metal plate and no spring at the back/top of the inside of the cartridge. Is this normal?

my car has 53,000km on, warranty till 60,000km or this december. do about 18,000km a year so it will be based on km's.

what are your experiences of these two filters. which one should i try first? Or should I just go with Denso.

valvoline was $13.59 (made in china) and pureone $9.99 (made in USA). The denso made in Thailand is about $15 from the dealer.

my biggest concerns are that the pureone doesn't have spring which I assume is for the bypass valve? and that the threads are imperial/US and not metric while I assume the Toyota would have metric threads. Is this a big deal? Websites say 3/4-16 but was does that mean in words. I'm a metric kind of guy. (I know its some fraction of inches).
 
3/4" dia, 16 threads per inch...yep, Toyota and BMW use this size (I put Ford Z-9s on my Beemer).

I'd use the pure One over anything that you can get down here.

If you are keen, chop them up, and do your own review on what you believe that you'd like to use.

is the fact that there is no spring inside the pureone of concern or is it purely a different mechanism between the two filters? I think vaguely that the denso had a spring.
 
If the Valvoline filter uses the synthetic media for filtering it should be good. It is hard to find info about their filters on the web. (It is said Champion makes them per this site)

PureOnes are very good but expensive as you know.

Alternatives would be a Carquest Blue or Napa Gold. These have synthetic media also and should be cheaper.

The cheapest of the 3 he mentioned was the PureOne. Between the PureOnes and Wix Gold, they're probably 2 of the top 3 here on BITOG. The third being Amsoil.

I use PureOnes or Wix myself. Go with the PureOne and be satisfied you did. Then you can have a beer with the money you saved! :)

we're a different market down here.

Valvoline are chinese, RYCO (formerly a trusted Aussie Brand) are now chinese, Toyota have switched to Thailand and dropped their "spongey" media.

As our dollar has climbed against $US, purolators are becoming a bargain...I bought a dozen L30001s for $50 recently.

I think you are referring to the spring that presses the media towards the baseplate. Some people us a coil spring, some use a "leaf" spring.
 
THose are both great links, thanks. Here are photos of what I mean. I think you've hit the nail on the head shannow. also, would either of these filters be good in terms of the bypass pressure for my camry? sorry, this is all new to me.

Aside from some specific models/part# ..most filter manufacturers use one bypass setting for all of their offerings. Most Wix are 8-11 ..most Purolators are 12-16. It depends on how the OEM spec falls. VW/AUDI? 30lb bypass for every spec'd filter. In the States, the Camry takes a common 3/4-16 thread filter with a common 8-11 psid bypass valve. The can diameter/length ..and the gasket is slightly smaller than 2.8/2.2 that's found on your typical Ford/Chrysler engine ..but the rest appears very generic

i use pure one's in the corolla and zx9r, never had a problem with them. Also used them on my 02 taurus and 06 fusion, again no problems or worries
