Hello all. Tomorrow I'm taking ownership of a 2007 Focus SE, loaded with all the goodies, and only 20,850 miles. It is out of warranty, so what oil/filter/OCI would you all recommend? I'm thinking PP 5w-20 for 7k mile oci's? the recommended filter is a motorcraft FL-910s, but i've heard of people using the FL-400s (because it's bigger) and i think the FL-793 or something. Any suggestions?

Had a 2002 good car used motorcraft 5w20 and 400-s filter it called for the 400-s though. The 910-s will be fine any 5w20 should work well up to you for the oci. I dont like to extend the oci beyond 3500 miles.

As you can see I'm doing 10K OCIs with my 07. Engine is clean as new through the oil fill hole. Nice cars. Very reliable. Only thing I've done to it is a new heater fan switch.

i was thinking about that too. does this car have a drain plug for the transmission? a few ford/mazda cars do. its a 4-speed automatic.

was there a reason for this, or was it by choice?

My current ride is a 03'Focus SE (2.3L Duratec) Auto, that I bought used in 08' with 57K on it. It currently has 94K on it and runs flawlessly (just completed a 2000 mile R/T to Southern California). Milage is 27 city...36 to 37 Hwy). It is by far the best compact car I've ever owned.

Your selection of PP with 7k OCI's is a good plan (I would extend it out to 8K), but I would suggest moving up to a Purolator PureOne Filter (PL 10241), which has better efficiency than the Motorcraft...and cost only a few bucks more.

Steve S...mentioned "transmission oil". I would not neglect this service and change it out when you hit 30K or so. You also might consider a Magnafine transmission filter, when you do that change.

One other thing...use a fuel system cleaner (Redline Sl-1 is my favorite) prior to your next oil change and before every OCI... It really helps in keeping your fuel system and injectors clean and just makes your vehicle run smoother.

Good luck with your new Focus...I hope you get as much satisfaction as I have with mine.

i have only ever owned one other ford product, and it was a 1999 escort zx2. LOVED that car, everything about it. How are the fram toughgard filters for this application? AZ is having a PP and PU oil change deal, both with toughgard filters.

at what OCI? I do some stop and go, but mostly rural roads. i'd say maybe a 60%/40% split between rural and city (60 being rural, 40 being city).

Whatever Ford spec's for the vehicle is a good place to start

If that was the case, we'd never have conversations about OCI's. haha

but you have a point. I'll check what the manual says for OCI's.

Yup, LOL.

The recommended OCI is "safe" usually.

If you are using a good oil... You will be able to extend that most likely. And of course use a good filter like the Motorcraft one.

I'd run a couple OCI's at the factory interval using whatever oil you intend on using, then maybe get a UOA with TBN/TAN to see if extending the OCI is in the cards.

The switch failed.

Stay away from all Frams...except their XP ($8.98 at WM). That filter is a good for longer OCI's (7 to 10K).

IMO Motorcraft is a good filter (for 5 to 6K OCI's)..but not for longer OCI's. If your going 7K+, the Purolator PureOne or the Fram I mentioned, would be a better choice. With the 60/40 driving situation you mentioned...a 7 to 8K OCI should work well using PP.

About time, the owners manual is raised as a reference point.

I am starting to think if OEM's read BITOG the owners manual will become an optional extra that will need to be purchased.
