Privatization of Higways and Roads

Has anybody heard the news? Bush administration is going to sell the higways and roads to private companies. #@$%!?!!! Is anybody bothered by this ??!!
 
Yup, and opened up to Mexican trucking companies.

Most of these roads will be tollways too. Bye Bye America.

Nothing in our future will be, on average and in final analysis, "better". Take that to the bank.

Thanks for the link. I think it's crazy. I'm not much into politics but this news kinda shocked me. Wantced it on CNN during my lunch break last night, some old guy invited on the programm said it was shocking. Especially in the light of highlitened terrorist security lately. Stuff like that must be controlled by government, not by some companies with their own interests or agendas in mind. People paid for these roads wit tax money now we're gonna get charged even more. Better incorporate autobahn principals instead of this nonsense.
 
Oh man, when are people going to get fed up with this stuff?!?!? Another scam just like privatizing the utility companies. If apples cost too much you just stop eating them until prices go down, but if the road you take to work costs too much to travel on what are you going to do?

everyone thinks that privitazation seems to save the world, but Im not sure why... because private companies can fire people easier than the government can? Thats the only thing I can see... companies still WILL make a profit, regardless, or else they will not be in the business. Competition may help, but the barriers of entry are so high for most of the entities that are to be privatized, that only the giants will try to compete, and they have their overhead, their costs, their pensions, and their high man-hour rates too. Does not change much.

I love how here I am doing state of the art research in a Navy lab, at a significantly lower man hour rate (yet make a higher salary) than numerous fellow chemical engineers that I graduated with who are working in industry... somehow the efficiency and value/execution for the dollar here is much higher than my peers in industry. But no, that cant be so!!! No way... privitization wiull save the world.. not.

This was a HUGE issue here in Indiana last year. The article failed to mention the unpopularity of it in the northern Indiana counties the Indiana Toll Road goes through was one of the driving forces behind the Indiana House of Representatives moving to Democratic control in the November elections. Privatizing here in Indiana has expanded to the FSSA and the gov is wanting to privatize the Indiana lottery. It should be noted that Daniels was Dubya's budget director when he first took office in '01. So it might not be a big surprise where Dubya's getting some of these ideas. Just my

Throw in a bunch of paranoia too. I don't think anyone is saying privatize everything, or that privitization is the way to go with all roads and utilities. You guys just enjoying saying and spewing #@$%! - the original poster makes it seem like this applies to ALL roads, and the rest join in. Al's the only one who provided a link and it's talking mostly about roads that are already stupid toll roads and bridges.

I'm not for privitizing everything, but I think with each project the decision needs to be made - sometimes the government does stuff better, most times they don't. There are enough fiascos on both sides of the fence and we better get our act and facts together.
 
I hate tollways because it is a pain in the rear stopping all the time to pay tolls and because of the very limited access. While the idea has some merit, it won't work without automated billing system that reads cars as they pass certain checkpoints. Problem with that is it would also facilitate writing of speeding tickets and tracking where you are, which represents a major loss of freedom. If the private roads would open up speed limits and you didn't get insurance raising points for when you did violate the limit, it might have some benefits, but in all likelihood it will be a mixture of private and government, and will give us the worst of both.
 
Uhhmn, wasnt the nat'l highway system built in the 50s as a strategic asset? So that materiel could be moved quickly in time of war? What's next? Privatizing military bases?

I was in S. Texas twice this past dove season along I-35 south of San Antonio and the signs were already up along the side of the road that say, 'future I-69(or whatever number it was) corridor. This is the first of the NAFTA super highway that will extend all the way to Canada, in what is touted as being the 'largest land grab Texas has ever seen'. And this will be a primarily toll-road, contracts have already been awarded to foreign ( I read Brazilion) companies for construction. These will be mostly Toll roads, at leat through Texas. A corridor not shown on the map will go right up through DFW and a car trip to Austin is expected to cost about $22 (this about 200 miles). (Dallas Morning News article read a couple of months ago). I think it will take something like 15 years to build the Texas portion.

Us Americans couldn't handle having an Autobahn, no way.
Too many people on cell phones, putting on make-up, eating, etc... Not to mention the general lack of driving skill the average American driver has.
