Hello,

Long time no post but I thought I would share an oil filter I cut open. This is off my 2015 Silverado 5.3. I got this truck about a year ago and the original motor failed due to the common lifter problem on the 5.3 engines. The dealer I got it from stood behind their vehicle and replaced the engine with a used one for no charge. I have no idea of the mileage of the replacement used engine. Runs great. Uses no oil in 2k miles. So far so good. I changed the oil right after I picked it up with Supertech 5w30 conventional and this Fram filter. It's has been replaced with another Fram PH10575 and Supertech Synthetic High Mileage 5w30. What do you guys think of the deposits. Once the media drys I can get another photo of the debris in the pleats. Yes, I know I hacked the oil filter open...

I'm with others ... the deposits in the bottom of filter look horrible. Not much captured in the pleats though. Hows that engine look on the top end when looking through the oil fill hole if you can see anything? Might consider running some Valvoline Restore and Protect.

Note that the Fram looks to now be an AC Delco in a Fram can. Even the fiber end caps are thicker like the AC Delco filter and use the eCore center tube too.

Very concerning. I agree looks like water in the oil. I think I'd change the oil every 500 miles just to monitor what's what. I'd send a sample off for analysis. Whatever that is it's probably causing damage.

With the curious coloring of that oil and the importance of being able to check for solid bits inside the filter I would ask Santa for a filter cutter too. WM has them for about the cost of an oil change.

Yes I really need to buy an oil filter cutter. I think the picture is lighter than what it looked. The bottom debris was definitely darker than pictured. In my very limited experience I'm thinking sludge breaking free. I hope anyway. Looking in the valve cover the head and rockers look pretty clean. Maybe just a little discoloration. I'm thinking change again in 1.5-2k and use a more name brand oil to maybe do some more cleaning. Truck is my second vehicle so I really only drive it when I need to haul something. It sits sometimes 2 weeks between use. Not sure if that contributes to the debris in the bottom of the filter.

Like suggested, try the Valvoline Restore and Protect. Lot of members here have used it with good success in cleaning up their engine.

If it were me I’d send a few samples out for a used oil analysis. If there’s anything suspicious, I’d take that as evidence to the dealer

Would do a short run with that Supertech High Mileage … then about 3k on the same type of oil … keep cutting these filters …
Have owned several 5.3L’s - never saw crud in the filter can …
