Pet peeves go in this post.

It all goes to the same place mostly. Very little recyclables are actually recycled. Sorry to ruin your perception.

The rest of yours I agree with. Except the Dutch? Whats up with that?
You're not ruining anything. I'm well aware that a lot of American recycling programs are for little more than show since there's no money to be made.

But that doesn't mean that no effort should be made when it's easy to tell what's what and the sorting bins are right next to each other. It's right up there with the shopping cart theory.

One I was reminded of today is people who call in over dumb stuff. We had 3 call ins just in the Toyota shop today of people saying they were hung over from watching the NFL game for week one game one last night. I’m like don’t get me wrong I like sports but come on be mature and don’t drink if it’s a work night. I don’t drink on work nights.

Not even close to the same. Returning your shopping cart is basic courtesy for everyone else in the parking lot.

Sorting trash so someone else can combine it in the same landfill later is an illusionary virtue signal. No value to anyone.

If they admitted to calling in because they're "hungover", they'd be out the door if it were up to me. It takes more than a beer, or even two, to be hungover. They chose over-indulging the night before over their job. That's on them.

Imagine letting someone who's hungover from watching a ballgame the night before service your vehicle.
Everyone's probably better off that they called in. Now they should know who to get rid of.

Are you saying these are employees that can’t make it to work because they are hungover?

Customers that can’t get their cars in because they are hungover?

Depends. If there really good techs better to have them there 19 days a month than some worthless tub 20 days. If there on flat rate they didn't get paid.

Management is free to make and accept whatever policy they want. A really good service tech can make a phone call and be working for the same flat rate amount at the place down the street next day. Supply / demand.

Yes can’t make it in due to a hang over. I’m glad they are being safe by not coming in but this is an every sporting event occurrence for these people so they are going to call in Monday as well. It’s very annoying to always be short staffed during football season and during the Olympics and during baseball. It never fails.

I agree they are better off calling in but it’s just super annoying. They will be calling in Monday too I’m sure. It’s an every year and every major sports event occurrence for these three particular people and occasionally 2-3 others do it too. They say they can’t watch sports without alcohol because they will go off if their team loses without it. These are the same people that spend 2-3k betting on the games too.

We had a kid we hired at the power company . Friendly , polite , decent worker , but he was young and wasn't taking things as seriously as he needed to . Calling in , showing up late , etc. He was still on probation and the Supervisor and the other two Foremen wanted to kick him loose . We called him in and I told them to let me have a shot at him . I told him that I was his last chance at keeping his job since everybody else in the room had given up on him . $30 dollars an hour , sick leave , vacation , 401k , pension , and all the overtime you want and you're acting like you don't care. People would kill to have your job . Are you going to make me sorry I stood up for you ? I think at the moment he realized what was at stake . He turned it around and changed his ways . It just took a dose of reality .

The other day, I drove by a parked econo car that had a missing lug-nut on a front drivers side tire that normally has 4 lug-nuts.

Thats the type of vehicles we share the road with.

Right after that a bus in front of me stops at a green light to let pasangers off. I slow down to about 5 mph and swing out to pass at a good separation distance while looking for any assanger to cross against the light infront of the bus. Sure enough one steps out, and I stop before I get to the front of the bus. She walks out like she owns the road, taking her good old time. While the light turns yellow and then red. Now I'm sitting at the red light with the bus to my right, and the bus runs the red light.

An by-the-way, I was on my way to the local post office to complain in person about the courier delivering 3 pieces of my neighbors mail to me when I'm waiting on important bank papers and now wondering if someone else got my mail.

On a street with the houses sequentially numbered, a grade school kid could get the mail delivery right. And on a 75 F day with no rain. One neighbor said it was not the normal courier, but the relief who works when the regular is on vacation. Still, only someone who does not give a dam coild screw it up like that.

I can see why it annoys you. I'd be annoyed as well.
It sounds as if they've been allowed to get away with it, and now they feel entitled. Good techs or not, it's irresponsible and puts an added strain on you and the other guys, they need to be set straight. Hopefully, someone will have a "Come to Jesus" meeting with these guys.

It also sounds like they have a problem if they HAVE to have alcohol to keep from "going off" over a ballgame. I'd be willing to bet that being fueled by alcohol makes them go off even more.

I can see your point, but @AutoMechanic says that this is a regular occurrence. Good techs or not, they were hired to do a job. If allowed to get away with it repeatedly, they become entitled, and it sets a bad precedent for everyone else.

It just took a dose of reality .
Perhaps you were the first one to speak in clear sentences, thus ACTUALLY communicating.
Lots of people in the workplace have been trained to steer clear of interactions. That means they don't bother communicating, or can't because they're so jaded and stupid themselves in the first place.

Glad he came around.

In a world of homogenous employees, where anyone can be trained to do a job, and there is a surplus of workers, your correct. I don't know these people, and maybe they deserve to be canned?

In a world of skilled workers, where there is a shortage, you have to decide what you will put up with. This of course causes a lot of friction with employees that follow the rules.

My old boss - who was a genius literally - used to call this the tyranny of the competent. People that follow all the rules generally get screwed. Not saying its fare. But from observation I agree with his analysis.

You think this is bad go hang out with a bunch of specialized software guys. They completely march to their own drum.

Off leash dogs when they are supposed to be leased.

People who park by the entrance to the local UPS at the strip mall fire lane.. at the curb/fire lane blocking the handicapped sidewalk access because they are "I'm just dropping a package off".

I don't have anymore voice to tell the kids to get off my lawn...

People pulling through/reversing into angled parking spots on one-way rows.

Lawn is now dirt but continuing to yell/shake fist at sky.
