Pennzoil discontinued PP5W-40, but kept all of the other grades of PP available. Why would they do that? Then they added a new PU5W-40 with the exact same TDS specs. That is a prime example of re-branding and re-pricing. Well, actually you do get some fancy new wording like Hyper Cleansing Technology with the 'new' Ultra 5W-40.

I thought somebody here on BITOG posted an email exchange with SOPUS tech support where they openly admitted that in case of the 5w-40 grade, it was just a label change (from PP to PU) because the 5w-40 was already designed to a higher standard than all other PP grades so it did not need any formula modifications. But it may have just been my imagination, and I wouldn't even know how to search for that thread now...

Well PP 5W-40 was re-formulated when they went from SL to SM with the May 2009 TDS. Since that time, Helix Ultra, PP, & PU have had the same TDS #'s. I think this is just a continuation of brand consolidation and elimination of duplication between Shell & Pennzoil:

"In an effort to simplify our product range, Shell Australia will no longer supply Pennzoil branded lubricants in the Australian marketplace from 1 June 2010. Shell globally will now focus on Shell Helix as the core passenger car motor oil in all markets outside of the USA."

You can read about it here: http://www.pennzoil.com.au/

Yup. And by the same token, Shell Helix is not readily available in the US, so that's why they have PP/PU 5w-40.

Whenever I click on the "buypennzoilultra" link, it just brings me to the regular site. How do you get to the online Pennzoil store?

This link:

This works for me, but if it does not work for you, on the right of the main page there are boxes that rotate/change and one of them shows a Ferrari hat and says something about get the European oil here. Click on that box when it appears.

Well, I'm in disbelief. The FedEx guy showed up this morning with 6 quarts of PU 5w40! Johnny was right, the contractor was obviously out of stock and Pennzoil probably had no way of knowing what they had on hand. My faith in the yellow bottle has been restored.

Not sure about that, but I posted a few posts ago in this same thread, that Debbie replied to my specific question - that there were DIFFERENT oils. That's why wer'e all puzzled by the same specs.

Haha, yeah the same thing just happened to me. The FedEx guy pulled up and handed me a case of Ultra. Thanks again Debbie!

I had already switched over my whole fleet from Mobil to Shell products for business reasons (oil & gasoline), but now I am really impressed with the company!

The GTI is coming due for an oil change next week, so this is perfect timing. With 152k on the clock, I am sure the engine will benefit from some Hyper Cleansing Ultra.

I had emailed Debbie on Aug 12th and not didn't really expect to hear anything back. Well, I got an email today asking me for a shipping address. Maybe I'll get free oil too!

Lo and behold, mine came too! Crazy stuff. Thanks to Pennzoil. I'm glad I grabbed some 30 weight Ultra to go with it.

Talk about direct marketing! It has to be cost-effective for Pennzoil, rather than some of the other promotions.

Hey, it meets VW 503.01, it must be good.

I'm calling off my 10K UOA on the Castrol and changing the oil this weekend to the PU 5W-40, to see if it helps with the typical but incredibly annoying Audi S4 V8 cam chain rattle on startup. If this oil even reduces that rattle....I'm a customer for life.

Well, since PZ sent me 6q and my car takes 5q, I can trim my Summer PU fill to 4q 5w-40 and 1q of 30 weight and still have 2q of 5w-40 to add one each to the Fall and Winter 30 fills. I dunno if this makes sense to people, but I frequently mix viscs. By the time I use the PU 30+ I'll have the data from 5w-30 Edge UOA as far as wear goes.

Going with 1Q 5W-30 with 4Q of 5W-40 brings you pretty close to GC 0W-30 #'s while still maintaining a HT/HS above 3.5. I wouldn't be afraid to do that at all and I get it.

I dunno about running straight 30W in winter. I know people do it, even in the summer, but the HT/HS below 3.5 scares me. Don't you need 3.5 to meet ACEA A3?

When I say 30 I mean 5w-30 or 10w-30. I know the HT/HS requirements are not met by mixing, but I also consider that I'm not heating the oil excessively. I have examples of 30 weights working fine in Euro apps. I also consider the 5w-40 recommendation to take into account some fuel dilution over the 10k intervals. I won't be running it that long, so it won't get thinned down. I'll post more on my thread in the Euro oils forum.

So, I am def looking forward to the PU. I consider the 5w-40 to be the best oil available for me.

Yeah I figured you were gonna use a 5W-30. Why do you feel the need to thin out the 5W-40? I'm just curious because it meets all of the VW/Audi specs and now you are gonna thin it out with an oil that is specifically not on the list.

Because the specs exceed what I need and the jug 30 weights are almost 1/2 the price. I only have 6q of 5w-40 Ultra and want/need to do 3 oil changes in a year of the same oil. Consider too, in the cold 5w-40 is twice as thick as a 5w-30.

You'd have to ask the question in reverse, which oil would I want to start my turbo in at 0f? Ultra 5w-30 is pretty good n that regard.
