Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40 Euro

I'd try the 5W-30 Ultra in my Chevy as well (currently running M1), though these days the truck only sees about 6k miles per year. I'd really like to get the 5W-40 into the GTI or Audi. The GTI seems to beat on the oil pretty bad. That engine compartment gets hot. The Audi is running Revo Stage 2 programming, so it gets a bit toasty when you drive foot-down.

I've actually given up on buying in a store.

For my last OC in my car and the Outback, I stopped in an Autozone in an area that I don't really go to that often. I picked up M1 0W-40 and M1 HM 10W-30, but they did not have the M1 filters that went with the deal. Changed the oil and used my OEM filters that I received by mail order.

Called up a few days later and they told me the filters were in. Drive out there on Saturday and no filters were in stock. The manager could tell I wasn't happy so he drove to another AZ to pick them up for me and got back 30 minutes later. Way too much headache.

The OC before that I wanted to run Max Life 10W-30 in the Outback. Went to Wal-Mart and Strauss Auto and they didn't have any. Went to Advance and was shocked to see a 5 quart container so I picked it up. The guy couldn't scan it so he went to check the price. I noticed the little Wal-Mart logo and then saw that the cap wasn't on properly.

I opened it up and it was full of used motor oil so I walked out of the store. At least every time that I've ordered over the internet, I received the oil that I wanted.

Oh, congrats again JW. You know that you won because your WRX used Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40.

Thanks Dennis! Checking the oil level after the 1K mile trip back and it appears to have leveled off. Next event is an SCCA RallyCross in Austin across the street from the new Formula One site on Sept 26, but I am doing it in the Legacy...which has not consumed any PU 10w-30 so far.

Okay, stupid question, but did Pennzoil discontinue Platinum 5W-40 Euro for the U.S. market? I no longer see it listed on their website. Also, I did some digging and found two different spec sheets for Platinum 5W-40. The sheet from 2008 (from an Australian website) has different specs from the sheet from May 2009 which mysteriously matches the March 2010 spec sheet for Ultra 5W-40 exactly. The #'s are identical in the chart on page 2.

Are these oils the same with the exception of the detergent pack?

This is the 2009/2010 data from the chart:

They just relabeled it to Ultra 5w-40 Euro.

I bought 2 jugs of PU today. 5w-30 and 10w-30. My VW does need a super-premium oil, and 30 weight should work well. I actually plan on spiking it with the 5w-40, so I hope the stuff shows up.

It depends on my Edge 5w-30 UOA comes out. That will determine how thin an oil I am willing to run. However, the plan was a shot of 1q of the 5w-40 into the 5q fill, just for insurance, just for winter and fall. In summer, I'll run the remaining 4q of 5w-40 with some leftover 30 weight.

I think Greg ran some Edge 5W-30 in his A4 1.8T for 5k miles and it came out okay. Maybe you saw that analysis over at QWorld. AJ - What is your take on the diff between Penn Plat & Ultra 5W-40?

Oh, I have that UOA saved. I won't post it here, lest I be accused of threadjacking. It did convince me to use the Edge in my car, w/a UOA. I already have the Edge, so I'm going for it. imo, the 5w-40 is speced partly to deal with fuel dillution, which should be less of an issue for me at 4 month ocis.

Right now, Greg is dealing with profound oil consumption in his 4.2 S4. He's changed to dino 10w-40, did an intake clean and piston soak and uses 4-cycle oil in his fuel. Consumption is now 1/2 as before and within specs. Oh, wait, I'm threadjacking.

PP and PU 5w-40 are the same oil.

Well if PP & PU 5-40 are the same, given that PP is 10 bucks cheaper per case, I know which one I'll put in the GTI that is due for an OC. I haven't had an issue with my GTI nor the A4 running Syntec 5W-40 at 7,500 OCI's. I just always wanted to try some Shell Helix. I like the Edge, but the low viscosity scares me.

Assuming that's the case, what was the general consensus on Pennzoil Platinum before it became "Ultimate"? Was it equally hard to find, and what did people think of it?

Yup. It was never available in stores. I'm not even sure if we've got a single UOA of it.
