Valvoline pays good money to have their 5W-40 approved by VW, but they don't write it on the bottle? Right. Maybe I'm jaded, but I just don't buy it.

They probably won't have the right oil at Walmart. The only 5W-40 they carry (at least around my way) is Rotella which is not VW 502.00 approved. You will probably have to go to an auto parts store to get the proper oil and even they might have to order it.
Also check the PCV system as suggested before. It's not normal for any engine to use that much oil that suddenly.
I'll be honest, i like hondas.
I don't hate them at all, they're performance at the track is real admirable..really.
Those guys are RIGHT behind the V8s even beating them..the thing is, the quality of driving.
VWs are more fun to drive, you have enough torque and a good power range to have alot of fun cruising around with the AC on, and if you want high end power, simply change out the camshafts and these motors will pull all the way to redline and have a more performance oriented power band.
When it comes down to it, VW or Honda, 400 HP is no fun on a FWD..sure, lets say a an 07 SI, or the 'new' VTEC takes on an SVT cobra (I promise you, I saw it happen..that guy never lived it down) sure, he took him in a straight line..but what about the ride home? or on a REAL track, with turns.. that 400 HP Honda will be the death of you.

It expressely says "Attached is a "Worldwide" list of oils which currently meet Volkswagen standard VW 502 00..."
It says "meet." That's just fine. It's however not the same as when the bottle label says "approved" -- which costs a fee.
PS: That's a VW of America list. Can you trust that? Look, they list Valvoline 5W-30 as meeting VW 502!

Well, for all practical purposes, meet is the same as approved here. Once they document it like that, they've sort of hung themselves legally if they start back pedaling on a warranty claim. So you can rest easy....unless of course you are a VW warranty lawyer who's job is to weasel out of warranties
BTW, synpower 5w-30 IS VW 502 in some parts of the world and the document does say not all oils are available in NA. So technically, it was not a typo. It was unclear, but not wrong.
Yeah, but Hondas seem to comprise the vast majority of the tastelessly modified cars that I see on the road, regardless of where I am. Wings that would be overkill for a Can-Am car. Grapefruit launcher mufflers. An engine sound that even makes my chainsaw sound good....It's laughable.

I myself don't give a flip if an oil is "approved" or not. Valvoline doesn't want pay for official endorsement? Fine by me, I just don't care. You can say "meets" and "approved" are the same thing, but haven't we all gotten into one or the other rhetorical skirmish over "meets"? I remind all of AMSOIL and Red Line which have in the past, maybe still do, "meet" tit and tat spec. Or do they just say "recommended for"? How about using clear language for the sake of simplicity and clarity?

I never said it was a typo. It's misinformation. Valvoline 5W-30 is available in the US, so someone may well use it erroneously based on this "Worldwide" list. The list should state "Beware of oil specs, recommendations and approvals varying from country to country." Why is VW of America producing an irrelevant "Worldwide" list? Shouldn't they be focusing on a list that's relevant for the NA market?

Well, since you are into language precision, I didn't say meet=approved. I said "for all practical purposes" it is the same thing. That means whether it is meet vs. approved means squat to you, the consumer, *given* the circumstances.
BTW, many folks confuse durability with reliability..

Mori, no offense, but it's really hard for people to answer some of your posts because you conveniently leave wiggle room for yourself to be sloppy, but hold exacting standards for your responders. Take one example: in your earlier post, you said you "never said it was a typo" (expecting precision from a responder) and yet in your original post, you only said "Can you trust that?" (a very vague reference leaving open a vast array of interpretations ranging from accidental error to purposeful misinformation). I don't know whether you are being serious in this sequence of posts or whether you are just doing it for kicks and giggles. If it is the former, then, either ramp up the standards you hold yourself to or get off the high horse.
I wonder why Castrol Syntec 0w-30 is not on the list? I can buy it at my Audi dealer!
