Parking lot scratch. Ouch!

I have a 2006 TSX, bought new, that been t-boned by a Propane truck, my wife has hit numerous parking structure posts, and lastly, she slid into the rear of a semi-truck tow truck. Didn't get that one fixed. Car is a beast! Car has 300K on it, runs like a champ. Due to condition and her having a new car, it has been relegated to the Walmart/Costco/work/dangerous areas of the city car for us. The first generation TSX's were, in my opinion, one of the best cars made. Ever. I probably wouldn't even repair that damage of yours, just drive it and it gives you the confidence of knowing that all the unlicensed/uninsured idiots out there driving their leased MB/Lexus, etc., better be careful around your car, because you just don't have to care anymore. I love driving it around now! Lol...

Maybe my wife was shopping that day. Here’s her latest attempt to shoehorn our car into a two car garage. Photo #2 shows that I invested in a stop indicator to no avail. I tell her just center the car with the flexible stop sign and you’re fine. Not quite ready for a carrier landing apparently 🫣
ICBW but from the second pic it looks like she’s trying to avoid dinging the door on something to the left side of the car…shelf, bench or whatever and to allow room to exit the car comfortably. I’d bet when she goes shopping she places packages behind the passenger seat because of the easy egress, but again ICBW. (y)

I had similar thoughts to @Kozman011. That white paint may come off surprisingly easy with a rag and carb cleaner. The gouges are there, but might not be bad with the white removed. where I’m from, we’d drive it, and we’d attempt to bondo and paint it ourselves, a far better option than totaling it out.

especially if he’s got some trouble and is only working part time, the guts of the car are wholly in-tact.

Gonna fix it, I'm sure. If they do total it, I've got a great body and paint man. Small shop, Alex and his son and others as needed. He does all the exotics in town. He gives me options and great recommendations. I imagine he would keep the doors. We will see.
And yes, the 2004 to 2007 TSX was one of the good ones.

AAA has elected to total out the TSX. They offered my friend 2 options:
  1. His car (will get a salvage title) and $7,550
  2. $9,670 settlement
There are few comparable cars around here for $10K. Plus there is the governor's tax, registration, etc. I found a similar TSX for $10K with blotchy paint and other issues.
My friend Alex runs The Great Auto Paint in nearby Campbell. Alex does all the exotics for the local dealers. His work is outstanding.
We will likely take the cash + car and bring the TSX to Alex. Dennis (car owner) should pocket a few grand but his car will have a slavage title. No big deal...

I had a similar amount of damage when a deer ran into the side of my '07 Accord which was almost new at the time. We were on a trip through the northern US. Fortunately all the doors and windows still worked and we were able to complete our trip and take it home (to Edmonton, Alberta) for repairs.

The body was dented from the front fender to the back door. No damage to the rear quarter. The auto body shop reskinned both doors, repaired the front fender, and repainted the whole side. I think the bill came to about $7,000. It didn't count against my insurance as the deer ran into me.

The repaired body has held up surprisingly well. Not as good as the other side but not bad at all.

Maybe security cameras may have caught the act in progress.
My family has been in 3 situations where there were cameras that actually recorded the hit and runs. However, the cameras were so
far away or of such poor resolution that they didn't pick up the license plate. Talk about frustrating.....

They took it apart. Will get it towed 2 blocks to the other shop; should be repaird by end of the month. Or maybe I'll drive it, ghetto ride style. Has that "just ripped off" look.... I kinda like it!

Did they provide any detail on what made the estimate go up?

Unfortunately, as I expected from the start, this would be a total loss.

I did not review the paperwork, but it was about a 50% increase. Ouch! Alex will make it right; his work is outstanding.

No big deal until Dennis tries to sell a 15+ year old car with a salvage title…! IMO Dennis should have taken the $9,670 and kissed the adjuster on the way out the door!

$10K gets you junk arounf here. That's the problem. The TSX is (was) in excellent condition.
I was surprised at the offers, though. There's just nothing around here. Crazy prices...

Here's the latest... After the dust settled a bit, we decided to take the settlement. As @gman2304 wisely pointed out, a salvage title, regardless of reason, hurts the value. As always, there are other factors, but this buys us time. Dennis got a sweet deal on his rental; Enterprise gave him the AAA price until the end of the month.

None of this was his fault and he loved his TSX but it is just a car. Interstingly, one of the Hospital managers reported a similar parking lot incident that day, same white paint. This time on the driver's side. Somebody needs to learn how to park, it seems.
