Overtightened oil drain plug

Try spraying some penetrating oil around the bolt and wait for 10-15 mins, hit the bolt several times, give a tighten torque first to make it move then then attempt to loosing it.

Here's what someone did (not mine, seriously); over tightening ATF drain plug . . . I learned not to overtighten.

When i bought my kia, it was supposedly dealer maintained. The oil hadn't been changed in like 4-5 months. The plug was so **** tight I had ot use a 3/8 breaker bar and put my entire 200lb body on it with all my force, and even then it barely came off. On top of that, the washer was too small and flat like a pancake, so I had to cut it off. The plug looked like **** so I changed it out this last time.

I read this post a few days ago so, for fun, set my torque wrench to 28ft/lbs (like some Google searches say, not sure if it's accurate) and tightened my oil drain plug. It's way more force then I normally use with only a 3/8ths ratchet.

I tighten by hand until it feels right then check with a the torque wrench set to the recommended torque. It's always a bit tighter than I would have made it.

I took it to a local shop I use and they took care of it for $20
Very intelligent move. I can't remember how many times I've turned to my mechanic friends for assistance in difficult situations. Some people work harder, some people work smarter. With experience and age comes wisdom.

In 50+ yrs of dealing with spin on oil filters, it seems to me that filters and maybe drain plugs too, seem to tighten during the OCI. Drain plugs, oil filters, spark plugs with a washer. 1/4 - 1/2 turn past washer contact is what my big brother told me so long ago. For the OCD, that spec can be considered a torque angle

Yeah, if I use a torque wrench I set it a taste under the factory spec.
And if I can thread in the drain bolt by hand it goes in the trash.
