Overdraft protection -- why all the hoopla?

But why write a check if you know you don't have the funds ?

Whats so hard about balancing your account ?

Stuff happens - it may not happen to the couple of perfect people in this topic but bad things can and do happen.

Plus, this regulation is for debit card transactions acting as credit card transactions. Checks are not affected.

The problem was my wife may write a big check without telling so that I did not transfer from saving account to checking account to cover that check. If I don't have over-draft protection, I would be charged for return check by the credit union and the party my wife wrote the check to, which can be as much as $50 or more. Which do you rather have $2 fee for over-draft protection or $50 fee for return check ? Also, it doesn't cost me anything if I never use it, what to loose ? On average I paid this $2 fee about twice a year for the last 10+ years.
