What do you think of the new Quaker State "SAFE-T-SCREEN' oil filter. The box says it uses a blend of cellulose and synthetic fibers and a special safe-t-screen to protect the engine. Is this filter any good? Is it marketing hype? Who makes it? It looks like a well built filter but how can you ever know? Roger PS It is not cheap--$6.00 in Canada--Fram is $2.50.

I could only find this on their spanish site, here's a translation:

With its special Mezcla of synthetic microfibers and cellulose, the oil filter Safe-t-screen of Quaker State it allows the entrance of less substances polluting, detrimental for the motor.

Compared with conventional filters in standard tests made by the Society of Automotive Engineers, one has demonstrated that the oil filters Safe-t-screen of Quaker State harmful polluting substances are three more efficient times when catching.

Doing the change of oil, without changing the filter, can be harmful for the motor of its automobile since polluting particles remain, which causes that the new oil is soiled immediately.

All the Safe-t-screen filters of Quaker State they are guaranteed to satisfy or to surpass the requirements of the manufacturers of automobiles and are put to the test according to the regulations of the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Typically quaker state filters are made by Purolator. Never seen this one before.

I dont know but I think this may be a FRAM filter with the QuakerState name on it.Look at the base, notice the holes.Find a FRAM and notice the holes in it,I have a feeling you will see the same thing. This filter is probably a rebadged FRAM X-2 filter since it has the screen in it.

Interesting...In the mini-Mopar oil filter study from several years back, the Quaker State filter was a repainted Purolator Premium Plus. Sounds like Quaker State has found a new low bidder!

The new Quaker State filter that is carried at Canadian Tire is not a Fram. The old ones were but they are carrying the new QS ones and I believe that they are purolator filters. They are the same as the new pennzoil filters that are sold at Auto Parts Extra. The construction looks good and they are reasonably priced. The old fram QS filters were green and the new ones are white with green lettering. About time Can tire started carring a good filter again.

Any more info about these new "new" Quakerstate filters? I noticed they were different as well, so I was going to post it here, but here it is already! You guys are on the ball. Just like Autobahn88 said-white with green letters, comes in a box, has ovals instead of circles beside the screw on, pn is stamped on the filter itself. Should I be buying this filter?

I recently saw quaker state oil filters at menards they were white with green lettering and they are purolators. I know it was not a junky fram and they were priced at $2. They look good and i might just buy a couple one of these days.

I have used Purolator for a while in a Mazda, and I am happy with this brand. The white Quaker State filter (at least the Matrix/Vibe application) looks just like a Purolator, so I don't think it's made by Fram. That's why, last week I bought 4 from menards (on sale $1.76 each - half the price of a Purolator) to use in my new Vibe. We'll see how they work.

Based onw hat I've seen over the years, I think this is one of the cases where the product is not the same in Canada as the US.

The Quaker State filters at Menards in the US are definitely Purolator filters, similar to the Premium Plus filter.

Canadian users report the QS filters to be Frams.

I agree. Does anyone have one of those oil filter cutters to dissect one of these new Quaker State filters?

I stopped by Menards at lunch and took a look at them. They seem to be better than the Fram filters, but that's only from the outside. If it is just a re-branded Purolator filter, I'll start using those because they are cheaper. Heck, they're even cheaper than the SuperTech filters (for one of our cars).

EDIT: I did some digging and apparently this guy thought that the QS filter was the same as the Purolator Premium Plus. An interesting note is that it looks like he cut open one of the green ones, not the newer white ones.

I was in Canadian Tire today and this is what I saw. In the Quaker State filter section there are 2 types of filters: Green w/black lettering and White w/green lettering. The old stock is definately the green w/black. I looked at 2 similar filters the QS3593. The green one is exactly like the Fram made Motomasters. The white one is completely different: Oval oil-inlet holes on the bottom, no plastic by-pass valve near the top.

The white QS filters are definately not Frams!

Be careful if you're buying a QS filter at CT because the white QS's are always at the back of the shelf as they are trying to clear out the green "Frams" first. Let the idiots buy these up. Reach in back for the white can!

Well, it appears that Quaker State filters are now indeed made by Purolator. I sent the following question to them in an email:

"I noticed that your oil filters have recently changed color (from green to white). Does this mean that you have changed oil filter manufacturers? Who currently manufactures your oil filters?"

I received the following reply today:

"The color change is a simple cost saving measure. Quaker State Filters are manufactured for us by Purolator. Thank you for your interest in our products."
