Orange Can - 'fess up

An E-Core:

It is a filter pattern where the filter element is supported by a plastic, cylindrical cage with LARGE rectangular openings. The filter element can rupture at those openings much more easily if the oil pressure is high. This could at worst let filter element material clog a passage and starve a bearing of oil. At best this kind of failure will make for a filter that has lost most of its filtration ability.

Most canister designs have a metal cylinder with small holes. Look inside a filter and you will see.

E-Cores are cheaper to make, so they are becoming more common.

I think the filtering efficiency and capacity of an orange can is probably "good enough", but I have come to greatly dislike the bypass/adbv combo. The fiber endcaps don't bother me.

...

The bypass/adbv combo is a "feature" of Ecores and Napa proselects, isn't it? The orange can, as far as I know, uses "normal" (albeit plastic) bypass valves.

The ProSelect that was on my engine made it rattle so bad at start up I thought my teeth were going to come out!

Can honestly say, 9/10ths of the filters I have ever seen purchased at Wal Mart have been regular Fram Orange Cans! I am in that aisle to buy my Oil & just take notice to what people around me are purchaseing also? Funny, on Monday when I got ANOTHER 5quart jug of MaxLife 5-30 with my $6.00 off coupon I was checkin on the stock of Chevron/Techron Fuel System Cleaner on the shelf. Fella with a Plain orange can said to me, "this seafoam stuff in the gas does the trick for me!!" I said, "do you own a computer?" Lookin by all the furniture missin in his mouth I should have known the answer before questioning!! LOL " He said no! I left it at that and said, "have a nice day" and walked away shakin my head.

You're mighty aloof aren't you? How dare he suggest to YOU, the computer owner that his Fram filter and Seafoam works for him.

This is a Fram PH3980 after 5k on my wife's Chevy van. Since they are clearly working well for me, I bought two more on sale yesterday at AAP. But I use lots of different filters, and I never pay full price for any of them, I like value.

Why would anyone want to use a FRAM filter when there are so many other better built filters out there at the same price or lower?

The two I bought yesterday were $2.55 each. I don't know of any other American made filter I can buy for that right now. And I already know the PH3980 works well in that application.

Get into the $4 range though and I sure don't reach for the orange can, Motorcrafts are one of my favorites. Then PureOne's for $5...Napa Golds for $6, haha so many filters so little time.

For the same reason I buy Purolators or any other filter brand: they work well.

Opinions vary.

Nope, I got the Frams for like $3.50 each so I stocked up. no reason to try anything else. the Fram PH30 Is a popular filter on boat motors. Marinas and marine supply places get ~$7 each for em. I use 3 a year and I still have 6 left in stock. (She gets pulled for the winter)

Reports of your demise were apparently exaggerated.

Wal-Mart sells a much better filter for less...I paid $3.17 each for a Purolator Classic.

Hmm. The last Orange Can I cut open just had the tension spring at the dome end and not the plastic bypass button. I can't remember the number but it was the smallest one I could find. Maybe 6607?

I didn't think anything of it at the time but I've seen more than one source that claimed that orange can has gone to a combo valve.
