This is on a 16 HP Briggs Vanguard V-Twin and a 20 HP Briggs V-Twin:

I have tried:
Mobil 1 10w30/15W-50
Redline 10w30
Motul 10w30
Pennzoil 10w30
Amsoil ASE 10w30

The oil that makes the engine run the smoothest and quietest..(much to my surprise) is:

Royal Purple 10w30 Synthetic SL rated oil and by a "football field".

It's the Synerlec!

Have you had your valve lash checked? If the valves are that noisy, they may be set a bit too loose. However, loose is much better than tight.

As the old saying goes: "Slappy valves are happy valves."

And all that was in Pete's first 2 months of ownership!

RL, Motul, RP and M1 in an OPE? What is wrong with you people? You put high dollar oil in a cheap, disposable device? Can't you afford to buy another?

These engines are not designed to use Grp IV or V oil. They are designed to use conventional GrpII oil changed on a yearly basis. If you want to use a better oil, use a good HDEO like Rotella and be prepared to replace it when it is worn out.

These are not Ferraris or Porsches, they are cheap, plentiful, industrial engines made for severe service.

The portion of your post quoted in red makes no sense. Particularly the middle paragraph.

I don't know where you think you are getting your information, but you are quite wrong. They aren't designed to use any kind of oil. They are VERY simple engines. They won't care if it's group II, III, IV, V. When taken care of, (heck even when they aren't) they will last forever. There is nothing wrong with using a high quality oil in a OPE engine. I use Quaker State Synthetic 5w30 in mine.

I believe that since this is still (for now) a free country and we are allowed to make a choice, i'll put whatever kind of oil in OPE that I choose, reguardless of cost. It's my money and my choice.

Why do certain people make statements like this? Are they just trying to stir up problems/arguments? Nothing better to do - or is it 'Everybody should do things my way'?

I just don't get it. Can't we all just enjoy the great info available on this board?

Cheap disposable device?? That Vanguard is probably a $1200 engine if you were to buy a replacement. Nothing inexpensive about larger OPE engines.

EXCELLENT POST!!!!

So you are saying that using very expensive esoteric oils in OPEs is something other people and the manufacturers should endorse and follow?

This site is to help people look past subjective and arbitrary advice and educate people on the importance and content of "PROPER" lubrication for all products, not just OPEs.

When you get on BITOG and "crow" about how great your B&S runs now that is has RL or Motul in it like it wouldn't run as well without those expensive esoteric oils, then you influence others to make a decision that is unnecessary and probably unwise.

If I didn't challenge you on this point, then you could basically say anything you want about oil and no one would disagree. Is that what you want? OK....here some examples...

"Put Amsoil in your laundry, it will make your whites whiter and colors more vibrant."

"Cook food with Redline oil, it will help you lose weight and be more regular."

Sounds ridiculous, huh? No more ridiculous than advocating using $12 per qt oil in disposable lawn equipment.

Each piece of equipment is spec'ed for the proper oil to enable it to last it's "DESIGNED" lifespan. Otherwise the OPE manufacturers would recommend Grp IV and V oils to be used in their equipment. They don't recommend them because they are UNNECESSARY to enable the equipment to last it's designed lifespan.

I could recommend using oil for jet turbines in OPEs but that wouldn't make them last any longer, but it would be a foolish waste of money.

You are free to waste YOUR money, all I'm asking is that you don't encourage other impressionable people to waste theirs.

Yeah, and the B&S engine in my Sears mower is $400 even though the entire mower with the engine only cost $250, What's your point? Like anyone pays the MSRP on a replacement engine?

Those companies recommend a certain grade, quality and type of oil for their engines because they designed them and know what lubricant it will take to make it last it's designed lifespan. Obviously, the esoteric oils are unnecessary or they would have recommended them.

Nobody would run those oils in my '67 Massey tractor because the parts were designed for oil from 1967 and to last with that quality of oil. Obviously, oil (conventional) is much better than 1967, so why would I run Grp V oil in an engine that was designed to use Grp I or II oil?

I guess you guys just want to come here and brag about who uses the most expensive and unnecessary oils in your OPEs.
