I've looked and looked but I can't figure what "CCS" on the oil spec sheets is. Could someone explain what it is?

"ccs" stands for cold cranking simulator.It is a measuring device to determine the cold cranking viscosity of a given oil at cold temperature.The lower the number the better.You might check out www.astm.org for more details.
 
Two questions:

1) what kind of measuring accuracy/precision can be associated with a single number like 10.3 cSt--a few percent? 0.x cSt?

2) given a number from the charts, and a measuring accuracy; what kind of variance is to be expected from the same oil but purchased from batches made 6 months apart--another few percent?
 
Some oil companies shoot for mid range vis numbers since the viscoity specs are wide, plus or minus 15% or so. I think that premium mfg such as Castrol Etc will narrow that spec to 5%-10% range.

I only wish Phillips 66 were listed also...that way it would be easier for me to compare....Speaking of VI....beware of it..as VI can be played with useing chemicals (the additives)....and can get used up quickly. The flash can't be played with...or atleast thats what I've been told.

Printing the number 10.3 implies that the accuracy is one tenth, that is, the true number is between 10.25 and 10.35. Since they don't list the variance, who knows what the variability between samples is. They may test 100 random samples and average the viscosity or they may mix the samples and test the mixture.

It really kills me when I see an oil product data sheet listing the viscosity as 10.52 or something like that to the 100ths. No way can they be that accurate. Not only is there variability between samples, but there also is variability in the actual measurement (caused by the instrument or the person running the test).

I suppose we would be relatively safe to figure an accuracy of 1/2 a cSt on any of these. Given that the oil temperature will vary in your engine, I think that is close enough.

I am using Redline oils in my 20 year old car,
but I lost my supplier who had good prices.
Does anyone here know who has decent prices?
I was paying less then $7.00 a quart by the case.
My car has 178K on it and I use it at the track and Autocross. I will try to determine from your charts (It won't be easy for me)what the best substitute will be if I can't find Redline.
Any suggestions would be appricated.

I belive I can answer #2:
Mathematicla convention dictates that a number written to 3 significant figures is acccurate to the last figure unless stated otherwise.

In other words +/- less than 0.1

Actually, the answer to his question #2 does NOT yield itself to theoretical statistical analysis per se.
In six months there's a good chance the actual FORMULA will change, which can throw the old number right out the window.
 
ASTM repeatablity is I think +- 2% per different labs to be correct. BUt most data sheets are +- about 10% and are called "typical" batches can and do varry 10% and are still on grade so DO NOT USE any data sheet data as absolute they will and do vary.

Hi there, I'm new to the site. I'm still a bit confused as to what the numbers mean.

I should be looking for an oil (since I live in Canada) that has:

high number under 100°C
low number under 40°C
High VI
Low CCS

So Valvoline All-Climate 5w30 or Maxlife 5w30 would be good oils if I wanted to stay non-synthetic?

Is there a big difference for something rated 5500 CCS and 7000 CCS? because I like how the Quaker State high mileage oil is thicker at 100°C but its CCS rating is high.
 
Do anyone know if there is any difference between ASTM4683 and ASTM4741 methods regarding HTHS?
My findings until now show me that the resulting HTHS number is the same for both standards.
