I don't know if I'm out of step with everyone but I have a '96 850 Volvo Turbo wagon (not a Ford Volvo, lol) with 135k miles of commuting 50 miles one way on 15 in San Diego. Speeds from stop and go to 80 with average commute times from a best of one hour to sometimes two hours are the usual. In other words tough use. The engine is modified with chip, turbo plumbing, exhaust system and headers along with port matching. I use Red Line 10w-40. I've looked in the cylinders and the original hone marks are still visible. The engine runs great and next oil change a sample is going in for a first analysis. The oil level move down a bit during 10k oci, with 5k filter change, and I add about half a quart during this time (beyond make-up oil for the filter). I switched to synthetic at 5k miles, and today's compression/leak-down (120k miles) is the same as the 10k compression/leak-down. San Diego weather is never cold and not often hot and I think the 10w-40 oil is working fine for me and the terrible commuting this car sees, four days a week (not driven on weekends, usually). I just though you might like another example of what oil to use in a turbo motor, with success (so far) under very consistant usage.
