The engine is an 18RG, old JDM motor. This is a 1968CC 4 cylinder motor, basically stock running dual 47 mm carbs. Manual only says API, SE series motor oil. I know that most new motors oils have taken Zinc and other metals out that this engine needs. I have read that Rotella diesel oils are high in Zinc and that it would be a good oil for older engines. Thanks for any input.

Rotella makes a 10W-30 that would be a good oil for that vintage engine, as would their 5W-40 synthetic. Seeing that you are in NC, you could probably use their 15W-40 and be okay.

Yeah, Id look at the rotella 10w-30. What does the OM say?

Not exactly true. The zinc phosphate antiwear compounds have been reduced and replaced with equally good or better compounds that don't clog modern catalytic converters but cost more.
In any case, a dual-rated diesel & gasoline engine 10W-30 or 15W-40 would work great in your engine. Shell Rotella is one; there are many others equally good. Look for the Service Categories CJ-4 & SM on the label.

Not exactly true. The zinc phosphate antiwear compounds have been reduced and replaced with equally good or better compounds that don't clog modern catalytic converters but cost more.
In any case, a dual-rated diesel & gasoline engine 10W-30 or 15W-40 would work great in your engine. Shell Rotella is one; there are many others equally good. Look for the Service Categories CJ-4 & SM on the label.

I guess it is not necessary for me, although my engine is older, it has roller camshafts and not flat-tappet camshafts but all flat-tappet camshaft manufactures recommend an oil high in zinc, especially during break in, or for any engine that is modified or is under extreme pressures where other newer additives fail, but the zinc is still there creating a chemical reaction with the metal to protect it.
