Hello BITOG

I have an oil burning Maxima -2003 currently running a GC 0-30

Runs like a champ but drinks oil like its whiskey. -I have put in over a qt and I have only 2300 miles on the current oil change.

105K miles and a 6speed manual-

I thought it would like the GC but now I am considering going over to the Heavy Duty oils any thoughts or insight.

From what I have read, this is a common problem having to do with the rings. Just curious to know if there is a good way to slow it.

Have you tried something like Kreen or MMO to clean things up? Maybe the rings are sticking. You could try a HM oil, but I'd do that after I ran either MMO or Kreen through it. The cause could be a number of things but cleaning things up is a good place to start. JMO

I run MMO through in the gas every other tank just to keep things clean. I have never run it through the engine. Would this be just prior to an oil change? -Like run it for 10-20 miles?

Am I reading this right? You use 1 QT every 2300 miles?
meh...that's not drinking it like whiskey...1 QT every 600 miles would be drinking it like whiskey...it's a bit high...but not really high...my truck leaks that much...

That is not bad consumption at all, and I would surmise it is from dirty rings/piston. I would run M1 HM 10w40 diluted with a qt of MMO. Or Just run the M1 HM by itself.

I saw a big difference in our friends Maxima with M1 15/50. He also had upper timing rattle and 1 qt/800 miles with 5/30 dino. Cleared up for almost 4500 miles. Def try that or some high mileage oils.

Keep using 0W-30 GC and extend the drain interval to account for fresh oil, or try one of the Mobil 1 High Mileage oils, maybe 10W-40 weight in warmer times. But a qt. every 2300 miles ain't bad at all...

A qt of MMO in place of a qt of oil and run it for a 3000-4000 mile OCI. 10-20 miles will do nothing.

Leave the MMO on the shelf at Walmart. Try Auto-Rx or Kreen. You want to clean the ring pack as maybe that is the problem. It needs to be done slowly. Follow directions.

Or maybe your engine was assembled by a new guy with a hangover on a Monday and the ring gaps are all lined up.

LOL Leave the A-Rx in Florida. Try Kreen if you're going to have something shipped, at least it will work as advertised. For under $5 a qt MMO is a good value for cleaning up an engine.

+1. If you go that route order some Kreen, do a piston soak, then follow the directions for adding it to your oil and gas. Win, win!

Well I've never actually owned a car that burned any oil- Except a v6 Solara with 115K -but it was barely perceivable amount and only at the end of a 5K interval.

This ^^^^, but in a '02 Maxima.

Mobil 1 0W-40 or 10W-30HM.

1 qt in 2300 miles is considered less than normal consumption by many manufacturers I would not be concerned about that at all. How many OCI'S have you used GC? If this is your first OCI with a different PCMO try two or three OCI'S before determining your oil consumption this is a very common occurrence.
