I've been lurking for a quite a while and I finally have a legitimate question.

I have a 2001 Honda Accord 2.3l with about 138k miles on it. It uses very little oil (maybe 1/4 quart every 5k miles). I drive approximately 70-100 miles a day with about 75% of my average driving being highway.

I plan on doing a trial with Amsoil SSO 0w-30 with a 15k oci. After which, I will be doing a UOA.

My question is, for a 15k OCI, is there any alternative oil filter to Amsoil's Ea oil filter? I do not have anything against them, seeing as I have never used one. But they are a little on the expensive side and I'm a college student trying to save as much money as possible. I attempt to accomplish this by small savings here and there in hopes that they will add up.

All input is welcome. Thanks in advance!

If you have a Pep Boys near you they have Royal Purple oil filters, they might be a few bucks less than Amsoil

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately the closest Pepboys is about 30 miles away.

Any savings I might get would probably get eaten away by fuel usage.

Possibly a Fram XtendedGuard the 10 dollar gold can, or KandN/Mobil one filter.

I was leaning toward Mobil 1, but i wanted to consider all options. I would save about 4-5 bucks, plus no shipping. I just wanted to be sure they could stand up well to a 15k OCI with no issues. As I believe to have read on BITOG though, Hondas do not appear to be very hard on oil/filters anyway. Thanks for the reply!

Mobil 1, Fram XG and most likely Bosch/Purolator Pure 1

have u tried looking up for a heavy duty oil filters such as Donaldson, Baldwin/Hastings and Luberfiner?

PureOne is a filter I'm completely comfortable with for some reason. I run them on my Dakota, but not for extended OCI's. I was under the impression, after doing some reading, that they would not be sufficient for extended drains. Maybe I stumbled upon someone's opinion and didn't realize it.

No, I'm afraid I have not. I barely knew they existed. I've seen those names listed though. I'd have to look at the pricing/change interval on them. If it comes out cheaper, even in the long run, why not? After a UOA, I may go longer on OCIs if it comes backs reasonable.

maybe i'm stating the obvious, but if you're on a budget, and looking to get that 15K OCI, then spend the extra few bucks on the EAO filter

... and consider that oil and filter money well spent

WHY?

in theory he can run a NAPA gold filter that costs 7 bucks for 15k OCI. Or even a non-ecore AcDelco

My point was to find a filter that would be just as sufficient for a 15k oci as an Amsoil filter, just cheaper in cost. I realize that the EAO filters are excellent filters meant to go even longer than 15k, but it seem to be a bit overkill for a 15k OCI on a Honda. I understand that it would be money well spent, but how about less money well spent with no change in efficiency at a 15k OCI.

Why don't I run them for extended OCI's?

The truck is under warranty, so I can't test it on that. Plus, exactly what I said, I read they wouldn't be good for it but it was a probably just a random opinion. I read this forum so much, everything begins to run together.

Why do I feel comfortable with it?

I've read they are a great filter. (I just wasn't sure about extended intervals) and it's the same concept as someone having a favorite oil, they just do.

+1 with Bosch Premium. Just depends on how much you want to spend. And, a Pure One would be fine for an extended OCI. I'm currently running one on my 07 Accord 3.0L with QS Horsepower and plan on taking it to 5-10% of the OLM or one year. Honda's are pretty easy on oil, and even recommend a filter change every other OCI. Any of the above will work.

Haha! I don't even drink though. I can't afford it!

If it is perfectly fine to use a PureONE on a 15k OCI, then I will not hesitate to use one. They're very affordable compared to the EAO filter and I already run them on my truck. Thanks!

1 - Royal Purple ( $14.99 at PepBoys Part# 10-2808 ). This filter would be ideal for what you want. I know, 30 miles away, but other stores are supposed to start selling them this month or if you are over that way grab a couple while there.

2 - Mobil 1

3 - K&N

I've never been in that area in my entire life, that I can recall. Haha! But, If I see them in another store nearby, I probably won't hesitate to give it a shot. I'll give it a try with the PureONE first. After the UOA, if there are any issues, I may switch to the Royal Purple to see if I obtain better results. Thank you!
