About once every 15 years I'll have to get out a screw driver. Otherwise, using a tool for a spin on seems like cheating to me.

In my own experience, properly torquing the filter and oiling the gasket first means I never had one stick that I put on...

If you do it yourself and install it with the right amount of torque, no tools should ever be required.
I just reach in there, wipe it down, with a firm grip, it comes off every time.
On a car like mine, not too much room for tools anyways... Strap is doable but you have like 1" you can move it. It's tight.

I have the blue handled ones by Channel Lock shown above and they work great.

I use my hands as well, I find those wrenches don't work well in all applications. Few times I had to use the aftermentioned screw driver method, but never if I changed the filter, as I always torque the filter by hand and lube the gasket.
I have both the blue-handled style channel lock pliers for when there's lots of room around the filter. These are commonly available at most automotive hardware stores. The Amsoil small filter (Lisle style shown above) filter remover for when access is tight around a filter. (e.g.: Subarus with Twinscroll headers.)
I would advise against using a screwdriver for two reasons:
#1: Some filter housings are so freaking cheap that they give before the filter moves, and then you're out of room to keep moving the screwdriver before the handle is up against the oil pan.
#2: Now that you've punctured a hole in the filter, you can't drive the car to a mechanic if you get yourself in this situation.
I would advise against using a screwdriver for two reasons:
#1: Some filter housings are so freaking cheap that they give before the filter moves, and then you're out of room to keep moving the screwdriver before the handle is up against the oil pan.
#2: Now that you've punctured a hole in the filter, you can't drive the car to a mechanic if you get yourself in this situation.

Strap wrench, saved me a few times.
went through this two weeks ago on my brother's prius...the quick lube that serviced it last put the filter on SOOOOO tight....tried every filter wrench....went all over buying filter wrenches I didn't have....the clearance is so small back there...finally got it out after just using a rubber strap wrench and SLOWLY turning....
