Man that sucks, since adding a oil pressure gauge the sending unit is right next to the oil filter so i have to make sure i dont over tighten the filter or im screwed.

I'm sure all of have the memories of the skinned knuckles ..pinched blood blisters ...bruised, hammer struck, nails and other stuff that comes with the experience that gave us all our collective wisdom.
You don't know how many times I've thrown a wrench in an attempt to displace the anger that I had over slamming my hand into the exposed sheet metal while breaking loose a bolt. Enough times of that and you eventually develop "the touch" where you have the brakes built into the technique.
Live and learn. Sounds like you had lots of fun.

All bottles should be capped ALWAYS when not pouring.
Remote filters are an option.
Simplegreen the oil stain and hose it out a couple times. It'll biodegrade on its own in a couple months.
Consider yourself lucky:
I know of one quick lube that did a dozen oil/filter changes on a vehicle. When I serviced vehicle, it still had OEM filter(never changed PITA to remove). I also know of several "forgot to reinstall the drainplug" OCIs. Too funny when quicklube says "we forget the reset the CEL/SES". You would think that noisy oiless engine was a clue to the owner. Seized engines usually are too!
When you do the work yourself, you might have a few problems but usually you can TRUST yourself to have: a new filter, an installed drainplug, correct oil level........
From the sounds of it, you rushed your oil change. Invest in more beers/pizza next time. And, take your time. After a few trials, you'll be able to change the oil/filter, along with the kids diaper, answer the phone, while cooking dinner, all at the same time, in 10 minutes, without injury!

All I have to say is yup people put them on too tight because you try and do it just right and it leaks you get yelled at. So the oversnug them and say the #@$%! with it.

Hahaha, great responses guys. Its good to know I'm not the only one hurting myself changing oil.
And just to clarify, this was not my first oil change. It was merely the first time I did it on the Buick. I've done dozens of oil changes before on my BMW, my Dad's Caravan, our GMC Safari delivery van, my Mom's Mercury Cougar, etc.
I just can't freakin believe I let myself knock over an open jug of oil. I'm usually so careful with that kind of thing!

A couple years ago I was changing the oil on a friend's RV. I was wearing an old but nice leather jacket as it was quite breezy and cool that day.
As soon as I get the drain plug off and see the oil pouring into the drain pan, a gust of wind comes along and blows the draining oil all over the arm of my jacket. I quickly reposition the pan and myself to avoid getting coated with more draining oil.
After the oil drained, I begin to remove the oil filter. Because I repositioned myself to avoid being coated by blowing oil, I can't reach the filter easily. I contort my arm to a point where I can barely spin off the filter. As I finally remove the filter, it slips out of my hand and splashes into the full pan of dirty oil. A tidal wave of used oil splashes onto the other arm of the leather jacket. After I finished the oil change I tossed the jacket into the nearest dumpster, making for a pretty expensive OCI.
