OCI for 04 toyota echo

Hey guys,

So what kind of OCI and Oil should i do on my girlfriend's Echo. She puts about 8000km a year on it. Has a 4-5 minutes drive to work (one way) 5 days a week. Usaly i take it once on the weekend for a 35 minute drive (one way) She likes to let it warm up in the winter too.

I put PP in my truck but dont know if i should use the same on her car or just use some dino juice and really short OCI with all her short trips... what do you guys recomand for OCI and Oil?

I would change it once a year since she only drives 8000km (5000 miles) a year. I would stick with a conventional or blend since it is a non-performance engine and the short OCI. However, synthetic of course would not hurt if you prefer peace of mind with a top quality motor oil.

Any reputable brand of dino oil will do that OCI without issue.

ditto on OCI... But Id do it once a year on M1 5 or 10w-30. You really cant beat M1 with Toyota metallurgy, from what Ive seen... super low wear rates.

Still under warranty? Stick to the mfg's recommendation and use any cheepie SL/SM 5W-30. A "yearly" OCI is great ammunition for a warranty denial.

Good point about the warranty. I guess I'm so use to beaters I never have to worry about that stuff. Such a shame though, because honestly oil doesn't go bad in a few months sitting in a sump.

Guess the automakers want to cover their butts.

Dont try a yearly OCI with a regular oil. Stick with the glovebox manual or underhood recommended weights and a good dino oil and change it every 6 months to keep the dilution from being a wear issue.

I have an '05 Echo and use Esso XD-3Plus 0W30 year round. Its a full PAO synthetic formulated for diesels and reasonably priced for a twice a year OCI. (about $18.00 for a gallon jug)

You really have to do UOA to determine that it is. My mother drives 5 blocks 4 times a day with a car full of stuff. She goes to the grocery store, once a week, where maybe the water gets to full temp. She is fine with 8-9000 mile OCIs on mobil1 without fuel or water dilution. UOA has proven this for that application time and time again. Her Plymouth breeze with 2.0L engine has 110k on it and still runs like new.

You really have to test for these things to know for sure.

So you are saying that changing the oil every 6 months is not the way to go, even if it clearly states it in your owners manual? Like mine does, every 5K or 6 months?

We were talking about dino and synth blends, not a quality synth like M1.

Hey thanks for all the reply guys!! Yea the car still has warenty till next year.. did not think of that. So i guess ill go with 6 months OCI with a good dino oil. What do you guys think of Castrol GTX??

People around here seem to prefer Mobil Drive Clean as a good dino 6 month/5000 mile oil. Motorcraft would be a good choice too and its about the same price.

Syn, just like conventional or blends can bve ruined by fuel dilution or excess water just the same. From that angle it really doesnt matter.

With the right analysis, yes. The OM drain intervals are devised as either a CYA or an economics-based interval. They are not necessarily backed 100% in engineering and test analysis.

Knowing what your driving style, interval, conditions, etc. do with respect to wear, dilution, etc. is the ONLY way to be 100% sure that the regimen is correct.

Doing UOA with a good analysis like Terry Dyson's will immediately tell you if youy can extend your OCIs, or perhaps if you HAVE to reduce them.

As I said, your really need to test these things to know for sure. This has been covered more times than I can count.

05, GTX at least on this forum has gotten pretty good reviews and most recommend gtx for 5-6K intervals. I would run it no problems
