NTSB proposes no cell phones including hands free

I agree completely.
I use my phone only sparingly while driving.
We all know that a phone conversation is very distracting when we drive, and it doesn't matter whether we're using a handset or not.
Implementation should be really easy in our cash-strapped states and localities.
It's time that we eliminated this particular drunk-driving equivalent.

So, Those times when you have used your phone sparingly, you have felt as though you were drunk?

Poppykock and Bullhockey.

I'm all for banning cell phones while in a car. Introduce some kind of technology that kills your phone as soon as you start the car. You shut the car off and the phone works again.

For that matter,I'd be all for banning cell phones period. 99.9% of the population doesn't NEED a cell phone anyways. People like to think themselves more important than they really are.

Lol, it's a safety feature that people safely existed (even on the highways) without forever.

It's also an excuse for people to be mechanically stupid and inept (I don't know how to change a tire; what's a belt?; etc). . Because they have a crutch.

Nobody asked, so I will.

What were the first bus driver doing when he piled into the wreck in front of him?

What was the second one who piled into it doing?

The initial collision was the idiot in the pickup fault.

If the idea of having a conversation is so dangerous, then by the same logic, passengers should be banned, or should be required to wear a gag and earplugs when riding in the car. I don't think a properly implemented handsfree (not holding the phone while on speaker) conversation is any worse than talking to your buddy riding shotgun.

It is, I've got bluetooth in one of my cars.

I've thought a bit about eljefino's post, and there's a massive difference between having a conversation with the better half in the passenger seat, and a workmate struggling with a technically complex issue over the phone.

For starters, if something bad is coming up, the passenger, being a part of the incident usually shuts up, and doesn't start "are you there, I can't hear you", and adding to the mellee.

Good Points by All.

Let us also put dead man switches on the steering wheel, so when one or both hands are removed, the car will stop.

Or... We could all just drive around in the Grindhouse Death Proof car.

LOLz, Jim

How a bout deep thinking while driving?

How about thinking all together. Because trying to decide if your joking with your post, or if you are really that in favor of government controlling everything and anything you do is really mind boggling to me. I may crash into a group of kids since I am so caught up with this thought. . . .

I need to be pulled over by the police. This is getting out of hand.

Heck, not a SINGLE person would die or get hurt from an auto accident if ALL CARS where banned.

So, you need to be in favor of banning ALL CARS?

So. If you drive a car, you do not care about people nor life and you should be ashamed with yourself.

Keeping it real,
Steve

Keeping it real? Are you serious? Can anyone in their right mind say that you have a RIGHT to text - which involves using at least one hand and taking your eyes off the road for up to several seconds at a time?
Personally I really don't have a problem with people TALKING on the cell while driving IF (notice the IF) they can do it and drive at the same time. Sadly that leaves out at least half the drivers on the road.

At 60 MPH you are covering roughly 90 feet a second. If you look away for even 4 seconds, you've gone the entire length of a football field (plus some) with your eyes off the road.

I'm not usually in favor of more laws - I'd love to see the ones we already have enforced. But due to advancement in technology, this is something that wasn't an issue back when MOST of the traffic laws were written.

It sure appears like texting was the cause of the accident involving the 19 year old driving the pickup.
"A 19-year-old pickup truck driver involved in a deadly highway pileup in Missouri last year sent or received 11 texts in the 11 minutes immediately before the accident, federal investigators said Tuesday.

The driver sent six texts and received five texts, with the last text just before his pickup traveling at 55 mph crashed into the back of a tractor truck, beginning a chain collision."

A while back here in Ca. we had a commuter rail accident that killed 25 people in California in which the train engineer was texting. These are just two examples - I see people doing it all the time - even on the freeway here. One night my daughter and I were following what we thought was a drunk driver. Here it was a teenage girl texting!

Yep, most (~98%) of the time the passengers are pretty aware of the driver's need and the traffic situation. One of my friends is pretty oblivious to this sort of stuff though, and car safety and risks in general (yup one of those guys that texts or looks up info on phone while driving) and I've got to yell out along the lines of "**** because I need to concentrate for a minute here".

The reason why the statistics show that cell phone use is so dangerous is that a large and significant fraction of people get lackadaisical about cell use if it is legal. Introduce a tax or ticket system and this lets people know that it's a serious issue to be aware of.

Taxing per minute to would be ideal to simply cut the rampant and lackadaisical talking, but yet very hard if not impossible to implement. So the next best attempt would be some fine system. If a conversation is pressing enough to risk a ticket so be it. Furthermore, hopefully the officer would be nice to go for writing up tickets for those who he felt indeed were compromising safety. Plus, the fine could be progressive for repeat offenses; eg. first ticket $25--less than a parking fine, but the second, thrice ($75), and the (n+1)-th: 3^n * $25.

Or just enough for people to start taking this seriously.

I totally agree with the below. Realistically, some laws have to be set up or a safety is being compromised in a significant way. In an ideal world where everybody had loads of common sense, we wouldn't need these laws; but according to some very plausible statistics and observations, we don't live in a world anywhere near that.

I don't know how you people can drive with a cell phone. When I'm out there driving, my full attention is on driving. My eyes are constantly scanning the rear view mirror, both side view mirrors, and out the front window. It's a major distraction whenever the car radio goes to a commercial. Most of the time I drive with the radio off. There's so much stuff going on out there, it consumes my full attention. I don't want nobody running into my beautiful Buick. If you're in the other car talking on a cell phone, I'll either try to get away from you, or I'll watch you more closely in anticipation that you're gonna screw up.

Accidents are caused by MANY THINGS. Falling asleep at the wheel, day dreaming, people driving badly, people acting like a fool while driving, texting, putting on make up, eating, drinking, young people that do not know how to drive right, old people that can not drive right, taking your eyes off the road to play with your GPS, change the radio station, look for the work i.d. badge you dropped, dealing with your kids in the car, ect. . . . a lot of the time, Accidents JUST HAPPEN.

The ONLY way to save people's lives from being lost in auto accidents is to BAN all AUTOMOBILES.

And if your not for that, shut up, stop acting like you care at all, and get on with your day.

I can talk on my phone while I drive. I can send off a text like "on my way" or "what should I get for the party" easily as well.

And I dive a 5-speed!

You CANNOT ban all things that can be considered a risk.

And just to get this right, Police should be allowed to operate there radios, emergency lighting, siren, and have a laptop set up shining light in there eyes while they drive fast going to a emergency call???

That's safe.

But me driving down the road talking on a cell phone, that's bad.

You like people telling you what is safe for you to do and what is not safe for you to do. You take comfort in that dont you? Let me guess, you think seat belt laws are the bee's knees too.

It really is sad.
Very Very SAD.

rg200amp, take some classes (or better yet get some work experience) on risk assessment and cost-benefit analysis and then come back when you're ready to make some arguments that make sense.

Well at least his made sense. You didn't even read all my post - if you did then your reading comprehension skills are very poor! Talk about sad!

BTW - this isn't about what you THINK you can handle, it's about what most people on the road can do. Going on your diluted thinking, we should ban drunk driving laws because some people can drive drunk and never get in an accident!

I was probably too snarky, but your posts show that you don't have much familiarity with those concepts so there's no point writing a detailed rebuttal.
