non-Top Tier fuel + Techron every 5k miles vs. Top Tier all the time?

This is interesting to see they deliver it at the pump. I'm sure my driving habits have more to do with it than anything but I do feel like I get more variability with my fuel economy at Costco than at Chevron.

Would be interesting to see what BITOGers think is the best gas for fuel economy. I'm sure someone has done some serious experimentation.

The single most important thing for fuel economy is going to be the base fuel. And there's little that the refinery can to do influence the energy content of base fuel during refining, which is going to come from the crude oil. And it may be different a month later when they receive slightly different crude oil. On top of that, fuel is a commodity. It has to meet certain standards, which will include a range for the energy content. I've heard that energy content can vary up to maybe 5%.

The brand at the pump may not even be the same company that makes the fuel. That's not how fuel is transported by pipeline operators, which charge more for "segregated" deliveries. They serve kind of as a commodity exchange and fuel logistics where oil companies put in commodity grade fuel and the pipeline operators figure out how to get the same commodity grade to the oil companies' customers. Their incentive is to transport fuel the shortest distance possible. So if an oil company's customer is 1000 miles away, there's a pretty good chance that the base fuel came from a refinery much closer to the end customer. And this stuff is often blended together in storage tanks, where it could come from several different refineries making the same commodity grade.

I use whatever gasoline and add Stabil 360 to every single tank.
Same, but AMSOIL UCL, then an AMSOIL P.i. every 4,000 miles. All cars every tank. Even trained the wifey to do it. I buy 5 cases of it at a time (6 per case) and keep them in every vehicle. I was doing the MMO+TCW3 for a long time.

Makes sense. I do Stabil 360 every tank and B-12 before every vehicles 5000 OCI. :)

Since doing this every tank of gas "feels" the same as I was convinced I was getting water in fuel often.

I carry a bottle of Techron concentrate when I'm on the road in the motorhome, not a lot of top tier stations in small towns in Texas hill country. I pour about a third of the 20oz bottle in at every fill up, which is usually 40-50 gallons.

Lake Speed Jr. says Shell With V-Power actually lubes piston rings resulting in decreased wear. But that is THE most expensive gas I've seen, so my 7-9mpg motorhome will not be treated to it.

Makes sense. I've just burned a tank of non ethanol gas with a bottle of Techron. From here, I'll either fill at Qwik Trip or add Techron at fill ups elsewhere. I took an empty 6 oz plastic bottle that held Lucas, I think. I mixed Techron and Marvel Mystery Oil 1:1. The MMO is just to dilute the Techron to a less concentrated state. Marked the side of the bottle every ounce. Based on conjecture here how much Techron might be in the gasoline, I'll add 2 oz of my mix per ten gallons.

I buy my gas at Murphy 90% of the time . A bottle of Techron about once a year . Twice if I think about it . My vehicles run just fine and I sleep well .

2 oz of 1:1 mix = 1 oz Techron + 1 oz MMO per 10 gallons of gas.
  • Recommended dose = 1 oz per 1 gallon.
  • Minimum effective dose for mild cleaning = 1 oz per 3–5 gallons.
  • 1 oz Techron per 10 gallons0.1 oz per gallon.
  • You're adding about 0.078% Techron by volume.
    That's a very light concentration.

I know. That's the point. Instead of 12 oz into "up to 21 gallons," which can also mean 12 gallons or less in some cars, I'm trying to approximately replicate what I could get at with a Chevron station fuel.

Not sure where you get your "recommended dose," number, or your "Minimum effective dose for mild cleaning," number. Hey, I'm all ears to learn where they come from. I recall reading that some folks here say that the concentrate is something like "up to 10x stronger that what's in the gas. As best as I recall, that was not a pull it out of one's ass number, but something from Chevron or other authority. Just now searched andrereading:https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/pea-concentrations-at-the-gas-pump.369865/

For mathematical convenience, I figured one 12 oz bottle (I'm using the High Mileage version for it's much higher concentration than the regular, so right there is a positive margin of error,) for a 24 gallon tank, .5 oz per gallon. But this is the dose for very occasional use, not continuous. So, let's use that 10% figure and that would be 12 oz for 24 gallons, or, if times ten, 240 gallons. That's .5 oz Techron per 10 gallons for continuous dosing. And again, a huge positive margin of error due to using the approximately 50% stronger version than the "Complete."

I readily admit I could be making math errors or need look at your information about dosages.

Whole bottle goes in the tank regardless of what car/fuel tank size I’m driving. Mixing up a specific ratio sounds hilarious to me :)
