NOCO GENIUS 10 burning out batteries?

I hooked up my NOCO Genius 10 to charge and maintain a battery and it ended up overcharging the battery and burning it out. I didn’t know if it was the NOCO 10 or a problem with my battery at first but I tried it on a mobility scooter 12 volt battery and it did the same thing. This is in maintenance mode. I’m sending it into NOCO so they can test it. Should I expect them to replace the batteries it burned up or is their only obligation a refund or replacement of the charger?

maintenance mode?
They wont be replacing any batteries.
What model batteries were they and type if known.

Pretty standard that their liability is limited only to their product. Pretty much 0% chance they will be buying you batteries

I never like leaving any maintainer on for more than about a week, seems like it’s better to give the battery a rest, wait a month, put it on again. The Battery Minder Plus actually got an old East Penn AAA group 65 hot enough to make it leak from one post, first EP I’ve ever seen leak.

Throw those things away for your own good. I have been using CTEKs for the last 10 years, including 24/7 use continuous for the winter months and have kept batteries charged with never an overcharge.

I bought a new CORVETTE in Oct 2014 and traded it in FEB 2022 with its original battery running strong due to prudent CTEK use.

Really sucks that this happened. Not 100% it’s the NOCO unit and have to see what the results of their tests are but it burned out 2 car batteries and one set of mobility batteries. I have a Battery-tender brand maintainer that has always worked good. I bought the NOCO 2 years ago as a backup but had never used it until recently.

Two Schumacher 1.5A maintainers did that to my bike battery. Fried one and would have done it to the replacement battery as well if I hadn't had a volt/ammeter on it. Voltage went up to 16 and stayed there on a fully charged battery. They replaced the first maintainer, second one all I heard was crickets. Never again for Schumacher

+1
I have an old G1100 and follow the same routine.
Every few months I'll switch the charger on for about a day or so...seems to be working as the battery is about 10 year old with no signs of giving up.

Plenty of us use NOCO products completely successfully.

I had overcharging with a NOCO Genius 5. Charging over 16v. Yikes! NOCO said that was normal. Called bs on that and they sent me a new one. Still charges over 15v. I don't trust their stuff anymore and will buy something else on next black friday

Odd, I've got a Genius 5, and it works great. Got it since it can handle the 6 volt battery in the Lincoln. Seems to have no trouble with the AGM battery in my generator, the Midget's 12 volt battery, or my RV battery.

What is "burning the battery out"? What symptoms?
I had a dead battery on a car I don’t drive much. I hooked it up to the NOCO for 12v lead acid and it charged it to the green light and then into maintenance mode and I left it on in the maintain mode. The next day, I noticed it was in charging mode on the second red light, like it was charging it from dead again. Later that day when I went into the garage, I smelled a strong rotten egg smell, couldn’t figure out where it was coming from after looking if I had forgot to bring in some groceries or something. I noticed that the NOCO was still in charging mode and I went to see if I needed to adjust the clamps and the battery was burning hot. So I quickly unplugged it. I later found out that the rotten egg smell was coming from the battery. After that the battery would not take a charge from my other Battery Tender or take a jump. The battery was dead or burned out.

After this incident, I recently tried charging another car battery with the NOCO but watched it really carefully. I was going to unplug it the minute it went to the green light. It was almost fully charged but went I checked on it about an hour later in was back into charging mode with only one red light. I immediately unplugged it but now that battery is toast. In the past, I’ve used my Battery Tender, plugged in all the time to maintain batteries on cars that don’t get driven enough with no problems.

I leave my Battery Minders (2012AGM and 128CEC2) on one of my BMWs and my Ferrari whenever they are parked...and they can sit, occasionally in winter, for up to two months without starting. Never been an issue...been doing this for years....though I have only owned the Battery Minders for a couple years...was using other brands prior, also without issue. If yours is over charging, I would call them about a warranty replacement (5 years if you saved your receipt).

There are inexpensive bluetooth battery monitors (under $20) to monitor battery voltage remotely. They can track cranking voltage and charging voltage too. A very useful tool, would quickly identify an over charging problem.

Certainly won't hurt to ask. But I wouldn't expect they will.

Can't compare a CTEK to a Noco. I've had mine for 10+ years and never a problem. I remember reading a comparison between the 2 brands at the time I bought mine and the conclusion (based on built quality) was like comparing a Rolls Royce with a Chevy.
Also look at the warranty difference between the 2 and also who CTEK makes the chargers for under their own OEM name.
Perhaps Noco has improved since then, but by all the accounts I've read doesn't seem so.
