Every now and then, a car gets picky.

Wife's is now one of those. Running for years on M1, no problems. So to be different, I threw in some PP. Car now has a "rougher" edge to it, in both driving and idling. It's now been in there for nearly 500 miles...and still doesn't like PP.
Too much cleaning power, maybe?

Which is interesting, since I have the same engine in the Cobalt, which went from M1 to PP with no issues at all. Haven't yet decided to stick with PP, or simply go back to M1 for this car.

Some cars are like women, I guess....

(I'll apologize in advance, but I can't resist - disclaimer: No M1 was harmed in this post. Professional button pusher on a closed course- do not attempt this at home or at M1 supporting fests)

Well, it's kinda like when you've been eating junk food for most of your life. When you get real food you think something's wrong with it.

What car is it that prefers M1 to PP? Perhaps others have an experience with the same car? Also is this M1 5w30?

My experience is opposite. My E430 like PP 5W20 much better than M1 0W40. Actually, my E430 like thin oil better than thick, it's much quieter/smoother with xW20 than M1 0W40, but I think PP 5W20 is smoothest of all xW20 in that car, including Synpower 5W20 and M1 0W20.

HAHAH! This was LOL worthy!

It might sound silly but did you knock off a vacuum line or something? I have used only M1 for 20 yr's but I do toy with the thought of switching to PP or PU.

Nope, I was thinking that too...besides the struts, car is in good shape.

This car has always been a bit "touchy" when it comes to oil, not really sure why. The other cars switch with no issues at oil. I also joke that it likes to tell me when it's time to change the oil too...

Some cars just seem to run better on one oil over another; maybe smoother or quieter on one oil versus another. Others have noticed the same effect, and I don't think its the general properties of the oil, but more that there's enough variation in them within the relevant spec and viscosity, that an engine may run a little different on one versus the other, and that is either felt in smoothness or heard in engine noise.

Other cars don't seem to care what you throw in them brand wise, and seem to run the same on whatever it gets.

After running M1 somewhere around 20 years or so in my E-150, it seems to like PP and Edge better. Smoother idle and quieter, in fact I'd give the edge to Edge. I'll be sticking to Edge for now.

Our Chevy Traverse runs noticeably "more coarse" (hard to describe) on PP and Synpower 5w30 than it does on QS green bottle 5w30. For some reason the conventional QS runs butter smooth.

I wonder what accounts for the differences though. Possibilities that come to mind to me would be the different base stocks, differences in additives (not just varying amounts, but one oil having say moly and no boron while another is the opposite), and the small difference in viscosity at operating temp. I think the additive differences would be the most likely factor.

I've been in auto repair 30 odd years.Running shops, years back turning wrenches etc.I have never had customers, techs or myself noticed smoother, rougher etc.on same weight oils(or different weights) for that matter like is talked about on this site.

My 99 tracer idled surprisingly rough after changing from Mobil 5000 to PYB(40% cleaning) from Walmart. After 500 miles it's almost back to normal. I had intended to change brands and it has turned out to be an experiment. I think it'll be ok by the end of this oci.

Same here. After 25yrs of doing it for a living I just have not seen it.

I don't think you'd notice it as readily as the owner who is driving it every day. Also being the auto extremists we are, we're not just more likely to notice it, but also to look for any kind of difference at all.

I have never seen it either, going from 20 to 40 and even years back to 50 weights, and never once seen a difference in normal engine sounds... I have heard differences in startup noise etc..

As for engine add packs, I was thinking the additives were like a heat activated chemical, that the properties you receive from the additives are not realized until operating (or a certain temp) is reached..

With today's oils, if you stay within the tier group, and viscosity they many oils from the shelf are so close it would "almost" be safe to say that they is not enough difference in them to warrant anything good, bad, noise etc..

However you engine may like iron... if your using M1 5w-30 hehe... sorry I had to give out the daily M1 jab...
