No problem running 0w-30 or 0w-40 grades in any Vw/Audi engine, including the hot running VR-6, as long as they meet VW 502/505 specs ....
Back in 1996, the 0w-xx grades were not very common, so they don't appear in the VW/Audi oil charts. I wouldn't read too much into it....
