Castrol Edge Euro 0W-20 M

I ran two used oil analysis on my vehicle, 5.75k and 5.9k intervals, 100 C kinematic viscosities tested at 7.0 and 6.7 cSt. The oil started at 8.0 cSt per the oil's PDS.

You and I are on the same page as far as what we're seeking to accomplish and I appreciate your input. If you would like to share your UOA data on the Outback website I know many people would be interested in hearing your perspective.

To date I would say the best commonly available products that meet the Subaru specs by the book are Pennzoil Ultra Platium 0W20 and Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 0w20, both are popular among the Outback crowd. Based on what data we've collected both products have provided good results in either Outback engine.

That is what I am doing in my vehicle. I prefer to use oils that meet my owner's manual requirements and carry manufacturer approvals with rigorous wear testing requirements.

Wear is a relatively minor consideration in most oils, that was low hanging fruit years ago. Those spider charts don’t give absolute values anyway, they are areas of emphasis between successive iterations of a specification or approval. They can show a strong emphasis on one area but that can only mean that a previous iteration was lacking in that area. You can’t conclude that one approval or specification is better or worse than another using the spider chart.
You need actual wear limits such as are in the Afton Specification Handbook, or elsewhere.

On those UOA you’re referencing, who performed the measurements and what was the ASTM test for fuel dilution? Also, what’s the repeatability and reproducibility for the viscosity test? You need that to know how and why the viscosity decreases, and what the error bars are for comparisons.

Reactions: GW.
If you must absolutely stick to an API 20 grade use the Valvoline Restore and Protect 0W-20. Save yourself the oil consumption headache down the road.
