Nissan's CVT, would you buy it?

Nissan is having some very definite issues with transmissions and engines and their response to the problems have been slow at best. It is a shame that the company that created one of the finest V-6 engine lines ever to be put in an automobile would be influenced as they have by their ownership to build the stuff they are passing off on people now. The old VG30 engine was as bulletproof as any engine ever as well as the early VQ30 engines but it has been all down hill since the late 90s as far as owner reported problems. sad,sad,sad...
JATCO may make the transmission, you still have to go through NNA if you need work.
Nissan can kiss my business buh bye. For starters, about 50% of their employees did not make the move to Franklin, electing to stay in Cali and are likely working for the competition by now. No doubt some of the brightest stayed. Then there's the stealer service that is mediocre at best. My biggest grudge with NNA is that they extended the brake warranty to 3/36K under a brake judder TSB but NNA wouldn't refund for a brake job done to get rid of brake judder a month before the TSB was issued. OTOH, I can thank NNA for getting me back into wrenching.

wow, your in love with Nissan. I did say 37 trips to the dealer. You blindly assumed I said 37 warrany refusals. I bet a ton were refusals if you want to get technical. if you have to go to the dealer 37 times, I bet you had to harrass them to fix stuff under warranty. If 37 trips to the dealer for warranty repair is normal to you, by all means buy Nissan

You did say 37 trips to the dealer, RIGHT AFTER writing the words "stonewalling you in fixing warranty repairs", so anyone that read the statement was led to believe that you were inferring warranty refusals. Bet all you want, then ask KBFXDLI for his actual experiences instead of speculating in an attempt to smear an automaker's name. No, 37 trips to the dealer isn't normal for me or anyone, but that hasn't been my experience with 4 Nissans versus KBFXDLI's 1. They haven't refused ANY of my warranty claims, which makes me wonder what made them refuse yours.

In my case, after three trips they fixed the headgasket eating POS 1.8 Sentra when the check engine light came on "misfire cylinder #3". same 2002 sentra 1.8L engine that you own, eh? If you have to go to the dealer three times to get something fixed under warranty for the same problem, THAT IS REFUSING buddy or do you prefer stonewalling?

If this isn't trying to say that you were refused a warranty claim, perhaps you need to read your own posts before you post them. What exactly is someone supposed to get from this post, if it wasn't that you were denied? Alzheimers is a treatable disease.

Yes, I wasn't denied warranty. But I had to pull tooth and nail to get them fix the Sentra 1.8L pos headgasket eater. After multiple trips to the dealer for the same headgasket leak. Let me spell it out for you. Car wouldn't start with 45k and low coolant level in the 1st trip, coolant reservior tank low. dealer response "coolant system pressure tested fine and they put new spark plugs." next oil change, I took a used oil sample and showed a ton of antifreeze. took to nissan dealer 2nd time..response: "the check engine light isn't on and it pressure tested fine". 6 weeks later, After 3rd used oil analysis, check engine light comes on "misfire cyclider #3" Dealer says headgasket bad, needs replaced. work order says "new headgasket and oil changed" jacked the car up, my supertech filter is on the engine. they didn't even do an oil change. So two months earlier the headgasket is fine but just magically fails with the check engine light? I told them over and over it was bad. The nissan dealer I dealt with tried to screw with us under warranty. Get this, we had an extended warranty to 75k, they still blew us off. the check engine light forced them to replace the headgasket. I'm sure they thought about clearing the code and sending me on my way. But I told them if they didn't replace the headgasket now, they can replace the whole #@$%! engine later. they caved. hey, if they replaced the headgasket the first time I went to them, no problem. who wants to deal with the constant runaround and lying? not me Oh, I was one of the first ones to post the Sentra 1.8L used oil analysis coolant leakers, I PM members who had the same car to be friendly and inform them. These Nissan apologists wouldn't accept it either. I even had one tell me that our nissan wasn't maintained and that's why we had a coolant leak. what a joke. I have a 2000 maxima and never had a warranty issue but that cannot be said of my 2006 Highlander. Went in for a warranty repair and was unhappy with the Toyota service. Promptly made my complaint to Toyota NA.

I'm on my first and only CVT car, a Toyota Prius. I can't speak to the particulars of the cone-and-belt CVTs, such as you find in the Nissans; the Toyota design is totally different (it's a cleverly modified planetary gearset that's actually integrated with the electric motor part of the hybrid drive).
I can speak to CVT function. Some folks don't like it. I love it. Some naysayers describe CVT operation as being like a boat engine. To me, it's turbine-like. It's cool listening to the engine smoothly winding up or down to the best rpm/load for the demand. Once I got used to it, multi-gear automatics seem almost crude, having to shift in steps, one ratio after another.
Assuming you don't identify any reliability issues in the particular CVT model Nissan is currently installing, I'd say definitely yes.

The Freestyle comes with a CVT, it look like Ford having success with, for 08 they are dropping because it cost to much and going with a 6 speed auto. I drove one today, kind odd driving experince.
This is the normal response when you first drive a CVT. I felt the same way, as did the few friends and relatives who've driven my car. Once you've driven it for a while, and the engineer part of your subconscious brain figures out what the CVT is up to, it suddenly seems perfectly natural and in fact, more sensible than a stepped, multiple fixed ratio transmission. IMO, anyway.
EDIT: One more thing, I especially like the response when I step on the gas quickly, as when passing. Instead of a harsh, abrupt downshift, followed by an immediate WAAAAAAAAAAA of engine noise, I get a quick but smooth run up to near max rpm, accompanied simultaneously with a seamless change in drive ratio to take advantage of the power change. Much cleaner and nicer than in a shifting automatic.
