He guys. I'm new to the forum. It seems like a real sweet idea. Basically I have one question. I always do oil changes at 3k. I have an 03 lancer es 2.0 4cylinder. I was wondering if taking it to midas or any other jiffy lube every 3k and getting their shelf oil and standard oil filter was sufficent. Do they have the right additives and decent quality oil? Thanks

Yes. SM oil there is enough. 3k is overkill for most users but won't hurt. Most here won't use Fram oil filters JL uses but they'll last 3k.

What does SM mean? I think the fram ones made for my car don't have cardboard in them. I went to walmart and opened up the cheapest fram they had for that fit my car and it didn't have a carboard sealer. So is there any difference in quality say between jiffy lube stuff and castrol gtx? thanks

Why an independent garage? You don't trust Wal-mart or Midas? I took my old car to Midas and they had great service. Maybe not all Jiffy's are bad. But what do you all think about the oil quality? Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot bro. Anyone else have any advice to give me? How long can I wait for an oil change if next oil change I do gtx/purlator. I can change my oil. I will next time. It's just raining like crazy here and I don't have a garage.

So everyone agrees that COI of 3k is decent for jiffy lube oil changes. Are there any differences between the shelf bottle and say GTX?

JLube is known by many here on BITOG as a semi-shady place to do business. Seach Jiffy Lube here in the forum, there are links to tv stations that did stings at many JLubes where they suggested, sold and charged for services that weren't performed.

Other occasions, they got in over their heads and left it half done. Other situations arose where the filters weren't snugged, they over and underfilled the crankcases, put oil in the tranny, ATF in the engine. Worse, they used non-specified ATF in sensitive transmissions that did the damage over time, and denied they used the wrong fluid.

Then, of course, the infamous drain plug snafus that left people stranded with oil-starved engines by the side of the road. It's a pattern. They simply don't have the savvy, institutional support or professional care to service every car properly, or even most of them. They use the cheapest, least qualified labor they can hire (because the least qualified is what you get when you hire the cheapest). That is their margin over a real shop or the dealer. That, and the crummy filters, the selling of flushes, filter replacements (that they may or MAY NOT perform), and their bulk oils from barrels (which may or MAY NOT be any good).

Jiffy Lube, Midas, Speedy Muffler, places like that are iffy prospects at best. You simply aren't going to find a great number of advocates on of these places on BITOG no matter how many ways you try to word the question, no disrespect intended. The fact is, BITOG is about doing it right, which means reading, reading, reading, study, read some more, filter the opinions you read, read some more, and of course, mostly, DOING IT YOURSELF. This stuff is about car care, and no one cares more than the guy that drives the car being cared for.

That sir, would be YOU!

As I just said in another thread:

"There's a vast number of internet stories about numerous types of Walmart screwups on simple things like oil and tire changes. No way that their shop will ever see one of my vehicles. Same thing with places like Jiffy Lube. Do it yourself, driving the car to a place where no one will hassle you about it, or take it to a reputable independent service station."

To me, changing the oil is a worthwhile and satisfying experience, really! Combine that with the cost savings and the ability to "do it right", it's a given that I will change my own oil.

Motor Oil Guide

Is there a mistake on that website? Shouldn't the first category listed be an SM category and not an SL?

Nothing wrong with the site. Its just dated material written when the current rated oils were SL.

Yup, SL is listed twice. The top one should say SM, the "service" description correctly lists the info for SM.
