We've used Trop Artic,Mobil 5000 and currently Havoline 5w30 in our 260,xxx mile Crown Vic with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. One of the most reliable vehicles ever made.

I remember the days when people on here asked about the OP driving style before recommending an oil.

Not down here south of the Mason-Dixon Fault Line, lots of nice cars around with dead engines or transmissions...

Okay, I would post pictures, if I could figure out how.

This car is great! I picked it up today. I got all the maintenance records with it,and a free full tank of gas.

i love the modular ford, its an outstanding engine. any 5w20/30 and a MC filter and it will likely run as long as you want it too. id probably run any 5w20/30 i could find on sale every 5k and call it good to go.

Ownned like 3 P71's.

The engine isn't a worry but the trans and the pumpkin probably really need help.

Take the top trans coolant hose off the rad and start it up and the second it starts running out sputtering etc shut it off. Take pan off and change the trans filter.Clean it out good.
Clean the magnet. Put in 15 quarts of Dex5 preferably Motorcraft. Takes 15 quarts of fluid with the cop cooler. Still will be a little fluid left in the converter.

Dump the diff and flush it out good with carb cleaner using a rag not a paper towel.Oil will look ghastly like a milkshake gone bad. I used M1 75-140LS which has the friction modifier already in it but recommend you buy the little bottle of FM at the dealer and throw that in too.
And Redline 75-140 is awesome too back in the diff if you can get it.

Use only the MC 820s filter in the engine. Pull the plugs and replace them and look real close at the cops the springs etc for any corrosion. Use dielectric grease on the cop head.

That should do it.

Yuour year has a really tall gear so if you highway alot it will be ok like 24 maybe more if your smart but around town its a slug. Best you'll see is 17-18 maybe worse if you like to get on it.

If you do like to get on it get the rear end gear changed asap. Lot of discussion over at crown vic net forum.

I have an '09 Crown Vic Police Interceptor and use Mobil 1 5w-20 with a Motorcraft FL-910S. These are great engines; expect 200k+ easy. I would recommend having the transmission fluid and filter replaced and refilled with Mercon LV fluid only. These transmissions are very particular what fluid is used, so use the Mercon LV. It would also be a good idea to check the spark plugs and coils as well as the PCV valve and fuel filter. Maintenance is the key to high mileage in these vehicles.

Congrats on your purchase; these vehicles are simply the best cars on the road--in my humble opinion!

As far as gas mileage goes, it gets around 23-25 on the highway and 16-18 in town. Not too bad for a vehicle that weighs in excess of 5500lbs and has a 250hp V-8!

I would be at the scrapyard looking for a mint (ish) Modular 5.4L V8, which can easily fit inside what is one of the largest/roomiest engine bays I've worked in.
Seen some wicked, wicked sleepers, and it seems like the guaranteed recipe for making a 2.5 ton car haul, is a 5.4 w the GT40 heads, and a Roots blower sitting in the "V" to cram the motor full of air.

My father was an executive w Ford for most of his career, as either a controller (financial) at one of a few different plants, or attached to one of a number of projects as the senior finance officer or whatever.
He was on the "team" for the last Gen CV/PI, and as much as I distrust American cars in general, I can tell you that the amount of time, sweat, blood, and money that went into making the P71 as reliable as possible without compromising anywhere else, well, I am half convinced that you have to TRY to break the car, and even then (and despite its otherwise complete mediocrity) the 4.6L just keeps rattling around in there!

Do keep in mind that there is almost no single bit if the 4.6 that wasn't already at least a 25-30 year old design feature, and oils have improved absolutely immense amounts more than the basic OHV (pushrod), low-compression, big displacement with low specific output Modular motors.
That said, what they lack in finesse, modern technology, or the like, they more than make up for in being a fantastically fun and inexpensive motor to beat the life out of, then a few hundred dollars and a weekend = a complete longblock replacement.

Before you go telling someone how easy it is to swap a 5.4 in a CV(something you've obviously never attempted), maybe you should check out info from the ones that have...

I run either Mobil-1 5w-20 or Pennzoil Ultra 5w-20 with a MotorCraft FL-820-S filter exclusively as I have over 2 cases of these filters in my closet! I change between 5-6K miles. Mine is a 2011 LX with 50K miles! Luv this car & hope it lasts me forever!

No such fluid. Did you mean Mercon V? Even that would be wrong as Ford changed to Mercon LV in 2008.

Congrats on the car!

I have been privileged to care for a small fleet of these cars over the years and I will miss them! What an awesome fleet car!

I have always run Schaeffer's 7k 5W-20 in ours with 10-20k mi equivalent drains and they run like tops and are spotless inside when we part with them.

Use any 5W-20 and it will serve you a long time. Only recurrent issues we've had is the trans coolers leaking.

200k is nothing on a crown vic.

It is just warming up. Run whatever you want in it, just keep the oil level up.

I would take a look at the tranny fluid and rear end.

At 200k miles, the only thing that is going to wear out on that car is the interior.

I had a grand marquis, even with new tires it gave unacceptable traction in wet weather. That was my only gripe about the car. Perhaps your P71 has a limited slip rear diff? That might be better.
