Changed the transmission fluid and filter along with the rear end gear oil today on my 2010 Crown Vic P7B. With it being a former police car I would have figured they might have changed the trans fluid before but it definitely doesn't look like it. The dipsitck plug was still in the pan indicating that the pan has never been dropped. The fluid was black. The rear diff oil didn't look all that bad. Car has around 145k miles on it.

So I know just dropping the pan doesn't get all the fluid out. I bought two 5 quart jugs of Motorcraft Mercon LV and used almost all of one jug for the fill. My plan is to run it like that for a couple thousand miles, prob till the next oil change, and vacuum out all the fluid I can get out thru the dipstick hole (was about 4 quarts this time) and replace it with some fresh, hopefully getting some more of the old stuff out with it. A motorcraft filter went back in it.

Filter screen looks a bit nasty. Nice work and 75-140 Amsoil should serve many more miles. I didn't know they spec'd LV for that transmission and same LV I use in my f-350 rear end.

Good job ! Looks like the trans filter was relatively clean, I have seen much worse. I don't understand this dip stick plug in the trans pan. What use is it and how did it get there?

Might be a drain plug on the torque converter. Pull the rubber access plug and take a peek. I used to cut a thin piece of card board and fire it up. Insert the cardboard into hole and listen for a plug.

No part numbers in the pan, definitely wasn't changed before though.

You do not need to run it a couple thousand miles to service it again, couple miles is all it needs if you wanted to get it done quicker.

Nice work. I Thank You

Look at putting an aftermarket transmission pan back on as most have a drain plug. Makes for easy work on drain and fills. On my Town Car, I drain and fill the transmission. Usually get four quarts out, four quarts back in. Been doing it since the car had 55,000 and now she has 165,000. At the time, the pan was like $29.95 at Advance Auto. But with our current economic realities, it may be $75. Haven't looked lately.

I have a vacuum pump that I put down the dipstick and I’m able to get about 95% out of the pan like that.

Some clarifications.

-The dipstick plug in the pan is the dust plug for on the assembly line, they push it into the pan when the dipstick tube in being inserted.
-2009 ~ 2011 switched from Mercon V to Mercon LV. You must use LV as the programming is calibrated for it.
-Mercon LV normally turns dark or black after 30k miles. So color is not an indicator. This is the same problem as the LifeGuard 8 that ZF uses. It comes out light green and at 30k is tan, and by 50k it is jet black like diesel oil.
-Most agencies hook up a machine to the transmisson lines to exchange the fluid so you will never really know if it had been changed.

As an ending note, you will want to do a min of 3 pan drop and fills to get the majority out. These hold 13 qts empty. The best I have got with ones that have the TC drain, is 12 qts.
