New Tacoma!

Nah, they're still loud, lol. At idle it is really odd sounding, but with direct and port injecting will do that. I haven't revved it up that much yet, but it is a little buzzy. I was transferring my stuff to the new truck and left it running. Was thinking to myself welcome to the "new" Tacoma tick

I'm waiting for another 50° day hopefully. I really like the Turtle Wax version, easy to use and seems to hold up decent. For the time being it will get constant undercarriage washes after snow as right now you can eat off the frame!

Thanks for all the kind words folks! I know the Tacoma isn't for everybody. They really do seem to be built for previous Tacoma owners. Underneath and under the hood is set-up exactly like the 2nd gen, just some new sheet metal and interior! It rides ok for me, it's the same exact suspension as my 2nd gen, just 146K newer. It's a truck, no Cadillac so I expect it to ride as such. I hope this one serves me well.
Yeah, the Tacoma ended up being a little too unrefined for me. However, if you know what you're getting into and you're ok with the compromises then they're great trucks. Enjoy the new ride.

700 mile update:

So far its been a love-hate relationship of sorts?

Love the interior and infotainment around it. The stock non-JBL speakers suit me fine and that's with a mix of heavy metal/stoner rock. Bass is a little muddy, but it's still better than my 2009. It is kind of a pain on USB usage as you cannot change albums/artist while driving, whereas our 2015 Camry you can. Probably alot safer this way.

The Toyota Safety Sense has gotten some getting used to. Blind spot monitoring is useful I'll say that. I will say one thing I do not like. If you make a panic stop it'll keep braking for you. Was coming up to a intersection and even though I had the green light a fire **** decided to blow through the light. Hit the brakes a little harder than usual and it thought I was going to have a collision and kept on the brakes even though I was not. Good thing nobody was behind me. Adjusted the setting to the lowest possible soon thereafter.

The automatic transmission, yea, I dunno about this. It has started to learn my driving behavior and does shift well and smooth. However 6th gear is for flat cruising only! I live in a mountainous/hilly region so it does shift a good bit. But it has gotten better, or I'm just learning how to tip in the throttle slightly more before a hill. The 1/2 torque converter lockup is giving my some issues driving up the mountain. It will make the truck feel like it's bucking/misfiring going up the mountain. When it goes for its first 5K checkup/oil change I'll see if there's any ECU/TCU updates possibly. They makes tunes for these trucks that solves most issues, but it's under warranty for a good while.

The engine is another thing I'm getting used to. The torque curve is different than my old 4.0 liter. Power is higher in the RPM's so you have to drive accordingly. Once revved up it does have slightly more power than my old truck. It is a noisy little bugger, but that's due in part to port and direct injection. Fuel consumption is roughly around 19-20 mpg. My 2009 would struggle to get 15 in the winter, downhill with a tail wind.

Haven't tested any offroad or 4wd capabilities as far as snow driving, but I expect it to perform as well as the old truck due in part to it's the same truck underneath.

Overall I'm pretty happy with my purchase. Was it worth the over $40K price tag? Ehh maybe, too early to tell.

This is exactly how I felt about the rental Tacoma TRD 4X4 Off Road I had a few months ago.

The TSS forward collision assist in my Tundra saved me once on a long multi hour drive on 2 lane road when car in front of me stopped to turn left. It’s only supposed to apply brakes for 2 seconds. I was already braking hard, but it brakes noticeably harder when it kicks in. Here is a link to a YouTube video that explains the system pretty well.

Congrags on the new Taco. I still love my 2005 Tacoma (4.0L V6, 5-sp auto, 4x4, Xtra cab) ... bought it new and it's still nice to drive, but it should since it only has 50K miles on it.

Yeah I hear you. Don't check back to see what they are selling your old truck for. That may make you cry!
Trying to sell the old truck for, you mean. But they will sell a Tacoma at about any price they list it. Dealer is trying to sell my old 2018 F150 XLT with 26k and a squeaky and rattling dash for $200 more than I paid new and $5k more than they gave on trade (I got a good trade price, too). Priced $4k more than it is worth even in this market (and replacement dash), IMO, can't imagine why it hasn't sold. Haha.

Nice looking truck. Good job on snagging one that you liked. l have read that the Tacoma supply is very tight.
Has anyone ever been issued a ticket for exceeding the 15 MPH speed limit in your garage?

The listed my truck for a couple grand over what I paid for it back in April 2019. There's no doubt they probably got it...

They sold 2 more Tacoma's in that same weekend. They can't keep them, they usually get 3 every week and they're gone that weekend. Talked to the salesman for an unrelated issue and on a weekend 3 people traded in Tacoma's on new Tacoma's...

As far as the speed limit, I've came in hot a couple times before, dunno about 15mph... 😁

Good looking truck! blue is among one of my favorite colors. I would have kept my 2nd gen, but the first owner was a beach bum, and the second was for a business that never washed the darn thing. It was rusting too quick to keep up with it unfortunately.

I could re-gear, but right now it's staying stock mechanically for warranty. After that (if I still have it...) it'll get tuned. That seems to wake them up.

Pedal commander is supposed to work well with the 3.5L.

4300 mile update!

First and foremost, probably what most people are wondering the most about, the transmission. I am happy to report the truck has learned and adapted my way of driving. It shifts very well and very rarely experience any shuddering anymore. It'll occasionally do it if I'm in a slow line of traffic and start going up a hill. Yes, it will down shift on alot of hills on my commute, but honestly our Camry does the same thing. It is also more apt to get into the lower gears to pass. Before there would be a serious delay even stomping on the throttle hard. It would say jump down to 4th then 3rd. Now it's strait into a lower gear. I don't know the exact gear, more of an analogy. I will keep it in S4 or S5 in town just to keep it from shifting too much.

The 3.5L hasn't used any oil during this period, nor has the level risen (direct injection). You can obviously hear the cleaning cycle when it does it. I notice it alot at idle or very slow speed. Isn't a powerhouse, but adequate for me. Still returning 19-20mpg, no matter if it's 87, 89, or 93.

Driven through several snow storms since my initial 700 miles report. While I haven't gone in some serious stuff, it still handles 6"-8" of packed snow well without the total need for 4wd. I drive like grandma going to church in bad weather though. 4wd will get you going, but good luck stopping. All the other idiots can pass me.

The stock Goodyear Wranglers are decent in the snow, not the best, but never had a moment of "this is completely dangerous". I'll typically lock it in 4wd on the snow covered mountain just to use it.

Other than that I'm still happy with the truck. I would probably buy another one if the odd chance something would happen to this one. It's getting its first oil change this weekend and going in for the 5K checkup possibly next week.

Added some mud flaps and bug guard just for some added protection.
