I’d definitely have kept the 2009 lol but Tacoma sales have boomed this year they can’t keep them in stock at the dealership I used to work at they have had most bought right off the truck. Please tell me it has a real key if not I’m so sorry for you.

No, it has the technology package, so no key. Honestly doesn't bother me, yes I know there have been some issues with it. I will say starting it is fine, but I keep reaching for the column to shut it off...

Well hopefully it won’t be out of warranty if it fails seen many of them fail.

Do you mean the START button? How often do they fail? Even if it does fail, it can be replaced.

Do you send your car to the wrecker when your steering lock or door lock breaks?
Yes it fails often quite often actually. You have to have it towed because most of the time it gets stuck either on or off so you can’t start it to go anywhere so your only option would be to tow it if you were out somewhere. No I don’t I fix all mine. But can’t fix that at home too much programming to do.

Which year/make/model did you see this happen on?
I’ve seen it on multiple Toyota especially mostly the 2009- new. We had a rental car that was 6 months old we had to replace one in. Then I’ve done a few of the Tacoma an 2017 and 18 if I remember correctly. One failed in another vehicle because the owner spilled Mountain Dew on it in a wreck so it come in to be fixed.

Besides, don't most fobs have a physical key tucked inside anyway, in case the fob stops working?

Yup.

Yes but when the button fails it’s wrecker time so a key doesn’t do good at that point

If this is the same place that does all the wheel bearings when one goes bad and throws 10 coils at a Modular when 1 fails, yeah, I could see the mindset of just putting the whole vehicle on a flatbed to the wreckers if the start button fails. This sounds like a place operated by an entire mob of folks suffering from serious Dunning-Kruger and in reality couldn't troubleshoot their way out of a paper bag.

The key is to unlock the doors. The fob has to be held next to the push to start button or use it to push the button itself depending on what your manual says.

Yep, I know :)

Useful to unlock the door in the event the battery is dead and you need to pop the hood.

Yes it is most of the time the button gets stuck so you can’t press it anymore so it won’t do anything at that point.

I think you are trying to get some kind of response from this. So, as a mechanic, if the push button is broken you would junk the vehicle?

Well if the button gets stuck how are you going to start it? It’s wrecker time. And yes I’m not convinced you only need to replace one coil with electronic ignition that’s completely opposite of what I was trained and learned.
