New STP Max Performance S7317ML (Made in Vietnam) Cut Open

If it's black silicone, it needs a burn test to verify.

The Carquest Extended Performance with a black base gasket says this on their website:

If u look up on the Premium Guard's website for the Ultimate Synthetic filter, it says both.

They say silicone gasket and hnbr which is a type of nitrile. Writer error I suppose. No one is perfect.
Vietnam has allowed some US ships to port but not have a base. Some ships, not a lot. Their ideology aligns with China not the USA. But it’s the jobs at home that are most important imo.

Looks same/similar to CarQuest EP filters.

I'd be stunned if it's not the same filter in different livery. Good to know.

I'm starting to fear for non-PGI filter makers. Nobody seems to want to even try to run with them on performance, quality and price at the same time. It's hard enough to find a filter even close in beta ratio, never mind one as well made for same or less money.

I read it this way:

A burn test should produce black smoke instead of white smoke if it really was silicone.
Yeah, not written perfectly clear, but the bottom line is:

Nitrile = black smoke
Silicone = white smoke

HNBR = Form of Nitrile rubber, so it should burn with black smoke, not white smoke.
I'm betting it's HNBR as PGI's chart mentions in their advertisement (not black silicone), and burns with black smoke.

Get out your lighter. 🔥 :D

The XLs has cellophane packaging over the port, I liked that extra care. These Maximum Performance models don't have that, but the gauge of the metal can on these MLs is really thick, very sturdy housing. This is the first ML I've bought. It's for my daily 2004 4.3l that I run 10-30 bean oil conventional in and change all the time. This ML doesn't have a "Made In" marking anywhere but is stamped "Product Of USA" on the can. We'll see how this goes. If all is fine, I might dump the K&N and Factory brand filters on my other vehicles.

Some here are using an oil filter for 3 changes and others are taking apart brand new ones. I'll never understand this place, hah.
I thought the same of new filters cut open as well, but then I realized there’s a benefit to seeing an unused filter vs used. And after that realization, I bought a filter cutter and contributed a few new filters myself. It’s all for the BITOG community. And I consider myself only a hobbyist.

Of course I’m also interested to see the 3 changes (>15k) oil filter opened as well.

I stopped by AZ lastnight and looked at the two new STP filters for a couple of my vehicles. The 9972 Toyota filter said Made in Mexico. Looked very similar to a Fram Endurance, better glue. The other (22500 equivalent) said Made in USA and looked very "Champ" like. I thought they were all going to be PGI, but maybe like their extended filters, they are using several manufacturers?

If its from our favorite Vietnam factory its probably like the Premium Guard EX series or the Microguard Select series. I see white filter paper so I think it might be more like the Carquest EP...

The original poster said something like "Made by Premium Guard". I think this Vietnam factory makes it all and simply places labels on the filters of different brands. So Premium Guard doesnt actually make filters but contracts out this Vietnam factory to do it. Its kind of like Warren making Supertech and Kirkland brands, but Walmart and Costco dont actually make the product. They contract out Warren to do it.
