New FRAM Ultra XG7317 cut open

Thanks for posting OP. Gent in the video did a good job. 4k Miles on synthetic oil isn't showing us anything but the construction. It's still a 20k filter right? I hem and haw because I'm doing 7/8k on my vehicles with the Ultra. I end up staying with the Ultra because it has worked well for me and $2 more isn't going to get me to change. Maybe this guy feels the same but for me 5k or under is ST/WIX/Fram orange can.

EDIT: I meant to mention the pleats look rather wavy for 4k OCI. I've cut open the latest model 8k OCI from my vehicles and the pleats have not been wavy like in this video. Something to watch.

Is the only difference between the Ultra and EG/TG the metal end caps and silicone adbv?
the media is a different 2 layer media just not wire backed mesh type.
fram ultra:
Dual layered synthetic blend media provides 99%+ filtration efficiency.*
Fram TG:
Synthetic fiber/cellulose blend increases dirt-trapping and dirt-holding capacity for higher levels of engine protection and longer filter life.
Fram EG:
Fiber and resin blend creates a proprietary filter media to capture 95% of dirt particles that cause harmful engine wear.*

I'll be running ultras on the subaru just picked up 7 due to amazon error for $38
While I dont feel they are quite as good as the old fram ultra.. either is still overkill for 5-6k changes
but at the price point its cheaper than a TG thats GOOD FOR HOT AND COLD DRIVING.:ROFLMAO: What about warm driving?
No extended drains though GDI and 6k factory interval.

The TG is a good filter but the price is too close to the Ultra. I actually got these ultras cheaper than TG.
Now if you could snag a dozen off rock auto super cheap I'd certainly run them.

Which filter will let your engine out last the ownership of the vehicle? That should be what we question.

Made post for the innards and the wavy filter at such a low oil / filter interval . Wonder if the mesh would have helped with the wavy pleats or was it already like that from the factory . Also , could the waves been worse at a higher interval ? Was considering this filter for next O.C.

Not buying what you are selling there.
That would be similar to the which car do you NEED.

Flipping that if they all cost the same which would you run?

Exactly my position. If I were running a 5k OCI on my 15 5.0 Coyote or 3.6 OB a $5 FRAM orange is ok as would a multiple of other filters (Wix, Napa, even ST would be fine for that.

I had the same sentiment. I haven't seen that in my engines at 7-8k OCI but same time the 2015 5.0 and 17 3.6 I own in my sig are NOT rough on oil. Those pleats at 4k??? Ya, no way if that is the norm.

Yeah, it's the same old mantra ... which could be applied to everything maintenance related to a vehicle: all filters, all fluids, tires, shock, wiper blades, etc, etc, etc. Since nobody keeps cars very long, might as well always use the cheapest products you can find and triple all the suggested maintenance scheduled items.😄

Whip City as done some cut-open videos of the new Ultra, and when new the pleats look pretty straight. It's probably the cellulose blend absorbing moisture. Unknown how that vehicle was driven. If it has a lot of short trips then there could be more condensation in the oil than normal.

Looks like the filter did its' job and captured enough particles (carbon?) to turn the filter material black, even though only a 4100 mile OCI. There is no more wire backing a fully synthetic media, but it is still a well constructed filter for the money.
