Hey all of you fellow car freaks...lol Quick question.

I have a new Charger with about 600mi. on it. I broke it in properly in the beginning and it runs great, oil smells like oil not gas thank goodness. If this were your car would you take it on a 500mi. round trip on the freeway where cruise control would be a nice plus to use or is it too early still?

Your opinions would be appreciated. (pretend you were in the same situation;)

Thanks

I took my 2011 Fit on a 2800 mile road trip after it had about 600 miles on it. I wouldn't worry about it, enjoy the trip!

When my mom bought her 09 focus the Ford guys told her tomboy even worry about break in time as it wasn't necessary anymore. I asked them and that's the answer I got not sure if they are just blowing smoke but her car runs fine

Cars are for driving - enjoy the trip!

Heck back when I bought my first new car (a 1986 Mercury Lynx XR 3 which was basically an Escort GT remember them?) I was in the Army stationed down @ Ft. Polk LA. I bought the car at home in PA, and drove for a week or so, then headed out to Ohio to pick up a buddy (who traveled with me) then headed down to LA. No problem what so ever with the car. However, It didnt have cruise control and was a 5 speed transmission. And I didnt keep it at a steady speed on the highway, or any unnecessary high revs etc. Never had any trouble with that car. Oh, I used Castrol GTX or Pennzoil 10W40 in it.

The car was supposedly speced. for 5W30.....yeah right. When I finally came home two years later, I decided to try the 5W30 in it because I wasnt in the Louisiana heat anymore. Well, it tapped, and overall just didnt feel right. So I went back to the 10W40.

I took my CR-V with 60 miles on it on a 120 mile round trip highway run at 80mph with 4 people in it...134k now and zero oil consumption or any other problems.

I also took my 07 Civic EX on a 900 mile road trip when it still had 100 miles on it. You've seen my UOA, Flawless @ 130,000 miles.

Came back from the trip and changed the oil. That was my break-in.

Try to vary the speed / RPMs a bit.

For example, do 70mph for half an hour, then 72, 75, back to 70, etc.

I'd also take an exit or two and jump back on the highway @ WOT to run the engine through its paces. You may get a funky smell afterward, that just means it's working

Nice ride, enjoy it. I say that after 600 miles, most of the break-in is finished.

My good friend, who owns and operates a high performance engine machine shop, says a long trip is the best thing you can do for long life. Coolant up to temperature, oil splashing everywhere, allowing parts to bed in and get used to each other. All good things.

I'll get flamed but what the h--ll. I'd dump the oil if you haven't already, fill it with a nice dino oil [unless synthetic oil was the ff] and drive it like you normally drive. Maybe after 30 minutes or so punch it out, and then back off it two or three times. Its already broken in.

BTW nice car enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had several new cars and mini vans over the years dating back to the late 1980's used for field service. No choice but to get out there and stomp on it for a service call. Sometimes 80mph for 2 hrs at a time. One car had 50 miles on it. That one lasted till it was t-boned at 235k. None had engine related issues, break it in how you plan to use it.
