New Battleships

I was watching a really interesting classic movie Otto Preminger's IN HARM's WAY (John Wayne/Kirk Douglas) about the USN during WWII. Of course it is fiction. A patriotic movie of the type Hollywood used to pump out during those dark times across the globe. Today they are more likely to make films to support the enemies of their own country while trying to make the USA seem like the world's most evil empire.

New SSBN is coming. It'll have quite a few warheads on each one. Not to mention the Ohio's still swimming around, including the ones with swarms of Tomahawks.

Funny, everyone thought the tank was extinct because they got beat up at the start of the Ukraine war. Now Ukraine, and Russia, for that matter, can't get enough of them. Why? They've adapted. Combat makes you learn new tricks real fast, including new tricks for old weapons.
They need more tanks because they keep getting blown up by drones and missiles. :ROFLMAO:

Very impressive, butt, and itsa big butt, 1 Nuclear weapon hit and It's Gone. Not the best use of our military funds.

Russia did a launch of over 500 drones the other day. It did a lot of damage of energy infrastructure required to keep warm this winter.

Pretty impressive is the drone damage inflicted inside the late great USSR that Ukraine has been making them deal with for quite a while now. They also put a real hurt on the Russian armored divisions that were sent inside Ukraine in the beginning days of the war with all sorts of drones. Any they could lay their hands on from all over the world.

Most definitely impressive; the ingenuity of the common infantry in finding ways around problems is pretty good.

Problem is Russia and Ukraine are next door neighbors; all they need is a hop, skip, and a jump to reach each other's land. The common drones don't have the 1000 mile range nor warhead that a Tomahawk does where we can launch a dozen of them a thousand miles out a sea without retaliation.

We're not in a 10 mile slug fest mile like WW2 is - which is what I think people think this is for. We can hit thousands of miles away through computer screens.

Yes. But it is truly a shame that any weapons had to be fired and so much loss of life there because the world keeps forgetting what tyrants always do when they sense weakness or fear. Ukraine paid a terrible price for trusting the USA and NATO by giving up most of their weapons in the 1990s. The world too had gotten giddy with itself over the collapsed USSR. The situation even a certain POTUS who joked and laughed at people when pressed about us still not wanting to trust Russia. Once again, we could not trust them. Truly interesting how China seems to be kicked back and allowing many of their so called allies collapse upon themselves.

I want to get better at welding. Maybe I should go to that school and then get a job welding in the oilfields?? But I am 72 so maybe I should just retire and weld as a hobby.
Steady hand, good eyes to see the puddle and good body to get in all kinds of positions. Thats all it takes along with a good welding school.

Russia will never be a friend of the USA never to be trusted

That is true of any military unit, any military base, any city, and frankly, any nation.

There is nothing that can take a direct nuclear hit and survive.

Nothing. I’m not even certain that some of the underground deep Silos could take that hit.

Which means it is an irrelevant criteria for whether or not we should have that unit, that installation, or that city.

What you need to be able to do is shoot down the arrow before that nuclear payload hits your defended asset.

Even better, kill the archer before he launches the arrow.

Making a unit capable of surviving a direct nuclear hit is a waste of time and effort. Nothing can survive that. So let’s shelve that criticism because it truly is irrelevant.

My stepson who is in the military says it will never be built.
Unless your stepson works in the N8 at the Pentagon, he is in no position to have an informed opinion.

His opinion is worth no more, no less, than the average man on the street.

If only there were a person on this board, who spent several years in the requirements business, working with N8, following the JCIDS process, and understanding naval requirements and capabilities, then, perhaps that opinion might be worth something.

But, where would we find such a person, 🙄

Agreed - the Tico class cruisers are incredible ships, but they’re aging out - fatigue cracks, etc. - so, it’s time for a new class of cruisers.

A Tico has a similar number of MK-41 VLS launch tubes, about 120, as this class, but this class would have the modern, electric, architecture to support future growth in new technology weapons.

Can’t really retrofit that to a Tico, it needs more engineering space devoted to electric generation, and it’s not worth doing when the ship itself is getting hard to maintain.

Time for new ships.
Starting to make sense now. Replacement and improvement for existing class of ships that needs to be retired.
Wish they would have just said that.
