I talked a friend of mine into trying the SSO. He was getting 18 MPG in his SAAB turbo. He is now getting 20 MPG.

One of the main advantages of the Amsoil 0w-30 is that you can use it to replace thicker grades (5w-30/10w-30/0w-40/5w-40), without compromising wear protection - this is where the bulk of the fuel savings comes from. In addition the very high solvency/detergency of this formulation will provide a noticable cleaning effect on high mileage motors that have been using conventional oils, which also helps to improve efficiency and gradually reduce oil consumption.

He also mentions that his engine startup noise is now gone.

A parts store employee told me it was too "slippery" and recommended 5w-30.

The parts store employee most likely knows nothing of motor oil aside from the basic facts and myths. The Xw rating on any motor oil only means it passes a cold crank test for a certain temperature with a certain rating. The 0w-30, 5w-30, 10w-30, etc. are all 30 weights, the only thing that is different is the fact that each passed a test for cold crank capability.

Thanks, I bought the car at auction with ~85,000 and I assume regular 5w or 10w-30 oil. I've been using Mobile One extended drain 10w-30 and recently changed to regular Mobile One 5w-30 and have gotten ~2mpgs more. I can't say I've noticed anything else unless I look in my wallet(8,000mi OCI of extended).
For the price difference between Amsoil 5w-30 and 0w-30 I can't see anything that would suggest not to go there.

I might ditch the SSO in the wife's Impala. Oil consumption stopped until there was about 3500 miles on the oil. I have since added 1 full quart in a 2 week period! Not sure I wanna be throwing 7 + dollar quarts in this thing every month! I might be going back to just plain old dino with this baby???

First use of a different complex chemistry? Sure you can have transitional consumption. Never would have accepted it if I didn't experience it myself. It should pass. If not within the same OCI ..in the subsequent one.

If you change over a high mileage engine to Amsoil it's critical to use their engine flush first - especially if you intend to run a long OCI. If you don't do this the first batch of synthetic can become very dirty after several thousand miles and you can see significant oil consumption. This is the #1 mistake I see people make when changing engines over to Amsoil!
1) Change just the filter
2) Add a pint of of flush (per 4-6 qts of oil)
3) Fast idle (I use 2x normal idle speed), the engine in neutral for 20-30 minutes, depending on how dirty it looks inside.
4)Drain the old oil/flush, change the filter (again) and fill with synthetic
