With the move of L87 engines moving from a 0w-20 to a 0w-40, I am now confident that the LT engines will live a longer life with a oil with a higher HTHS.
0w-40 seems like quite the move going 2 levels up. Might even hit fuel mileage a little. Also significant VII that are prone to shear and really make up a percent of the oil that would be better occupied with other ingredients in the formulation.
In my 2016 Suburban with the 5.3 (L83) I am looking at going from Amsoil 0w-20 Sig.Series (2.7 hths) to HPL 5w-30 No VII (hths 3.399). Seems like a happy balance with a nice jump in HTHS. Looking forward to getting this in, before the warm weather arrives along with a CarQuest Premium 84502 filter waiting to go on. Will run the full OLM change interval.
I know my L83 is not part of the recall, but the engine is in the same engine family and longevity is essential.
I was initially going to go with Amsoil 5w-30 SS, but (hths of 3.1), I like the hths that the HPL NoVII has, and I wanted to stay with a Dexos1gen3 formulation.
