Extended drain intervals is important when you take long trips. I'm planning a 10,000 mile ride for this summer. Changing the oil on the road is a pain. So if I can reduce the number of times I have to change the oil I'm a happy man.

What do you ride. I have several oil analysis with 10K plus drain on BMW twins. I'm running 6K drains on 10w40 Amsoil in my Triumph Sprint ST. This is what is recommended in the owners manual.
MSParks: What are the results of your 10k tests on the BMW twin. Also what model engine was it (oilhead, airhead, single, etc.)?
I ride a '95 BMW R100GS. 17,551 miles on it today. Bought it a few weeks ago.

I want an oil I can push to extended drains with hard use, high and low temps, off road, stop and go etc. I think you get the idea. There will be some 115 degree days this summer going across the dessert on that 10,000+ mile ride. An Amsoil rep told me they don't have a filter for me.
Also, as far as I know BMW filters are my only option, a hinged cartridge type. I know guys that put 10k on BMW filters, changing the filter every other oil change. If there is something better I'd be interested. I'm already paying $12 for a BMW filter.

I should add that the one place where I would be even less inclined to even consider extending a drain interval is in my motorcycles!
If the factory recommends/allows JASO MA dino for a 6K interval I'm going Amsoil AMO 10W-40 for a 3K interval (once broken in, that is). I want to see and feel that oil when it comes out: I want to inspect the filter.
I want my motorcycles to LAST much longer than the average bike does... And I buy USED.
Cheapest engine, transmission & clutch insurance you can buy, IMHO! Oil is even more the lifeblood of a motorcycle than a car/truck and probably not the best place to save a buck or two.

My Honda VFR has Amsoil AMO 10W40 and an Amsoil oil filter this last oil change. I plan on living the oil in for the full 8K OCI that Honda recommends. I might chicken out at 5K I don't know. Shoot if it's still shifting good...

Seriously, there are BMW dealership in almost every state, you can actually buy almost anything on the Web and have it shipped to one of your planned stops. On my trip I had a fresh set of tires, oil filter, 4 quarts of Amsoil AMO, a new shield for my helmet & my summer jacket waiting for me in my home town for the ride back to the Left Coast.
Uh... You ARE planning to stop somewhere on this trip, AREN'T you? This trip IS in the USA, isn't it?
Anyway, GOOD LUCK! and I hope you have a wonderful and safe time. Maybe I'll see you out there sometime this summer. As long as I can still hoist one of my legs over the seat I'll be doing at the very least a long trip every year.

Your right. BMW dealer support is pretty good in the states. But I have this thing about letting other people work on my machines. I just don't trust anyone but myself to do the job right.
I will probably find a friend on the road and change the oil and tires there. Try and plan the trip around doing that. Like you said have the supplies sent there in advance.

This info used to be in the lube handbook put out by Ethyl Corporation, a major producer of oil additive packages. However, I did a google search the other day and couldn't find the document. Perhaps someone has it bookmarked? It's the best reference I've come across on all these obscure specifications, including most of the European ones....

Quite a price increase.
The stuff out now is $12 shipped to my door or $17 at the dealer. I would have to be able to run it over three times as long to warrant the cost, comparing it the oil I use now.
Is there any data out there on how long we can run this stuff in our bikes?

I checked and the dealer/preffered customer price is $6.05 a quart or $69 a case. All in all that's not too bad of a price.
