New 2023 Corolla and 0W-8 oil

Is called "Toyota Care" and oil changes are provided for two years. Is it less hassle than sourcing the right oil? We bought a slightly used Highlander. I plan on using the remainder of Toyota Care. The manual says 0/20 but the last oil change listed 0/16 on the sticker in the car. Unlike the OP I'm not losing sleep over it.
 
You should get .8% better fuel economy using 0W8 over a 0W16 according to this SAE technical paper.

So if you average 36 MPG and change the oil every 5K miles, the car will use 138.9 gallons of gas between oil changes on 0W8.

Using 0W16 will make the car consume use 1.1 gallon more of gas over a 0W8. Do the math.
But 0W8 is more expensive than a 0W16, probably much more than the 1.1 gallon of extra fuel one will burn using a 0W16 instead.

And good luck finding 0W8 as of June 2023.

I’m not losing any sleep over it either, bud. In my experience, Toyota care sucks. Between wasting hours at the dealer, dealing with oily hand prints on my seats (it’s happened to me on a prior vehicle), over tightened filters and plugs, it’s far easier to do it myself.

So I just bought a gas 2023 Corolla with the 2.0 as a commuter. Toyota calls for 0W-8 oil for this. I’m fairly certain they made a change within the last month or so from 0W-16. I do my own oil changes and sourcing OW-8 seems about impossible. The manual does say you can use 0W-16 but it must be changed to 0W-8 at the next change. My wife has a camry that calls for 0W-16 and I would like to use the same oil in both. I’m aware of the car care nuts videos stating that these dynsmic farce engines need the oil grades Toyota calls for, and I believe there are threads here disparaging his claims.

I’m all about giving my vehicles the best protection. Does the Corolla really need this pathetic water oil, or is it just for CAFE standards and to get .1 better MPG? I doubt they would have made a mechanical change mid-year that would necessitate the lighter grade, or would they? Should I go even heavier for both vehicles at 0W-20? At least then I’d have way more options.

Any comments would be appreciated.

This is bad advice overall though it will work, the only proper oil is what the manual calls for…. If it specified a 0w-8 then use that. I agree if it says 0w-16 can be used that’s fine, but when you get to xW-20 that’s not specified and quite different than 0w-8

I would stay with a 0w-16 or if you really living on the wild side a 0w-20 😎😳😳🍝
 
If you use 0w16 oil, you'll kill the environment and waste precious resources.

We could care less how long the engine lasts, or whether it turns into a startup clattering/knocking and/or oil burning nightmare.

But, that .5% MPG increase will prevent TEOTWAWKI.

That 1/2 % less MPG from the 0w16 or 0w20 will break your budget too. You might not be able to make the mortgage payments and have to live in the Corolla.

If you didn't know it already, the difference between 39.9MPG and 40.1MPG is the breaking point for the universe. It will implode.

I'd use a 5w30 synth 🤣 and practice DIY maintenance.

Toyotacareless... where the trainee hacks overtighten your filters and stip drainplugs, forget to add or drain oil, or simply over/under fill by an excessive amount. The overfill might help when you're 3 quarts low before you schedule your next 10k interval. Its a win win!

Since when is M1 FS 0W-40 thick? It used to be labeled as an Energy Conserving motor oil... way back ... when.

Use a decent 0W-20 and your engine will thank you and the oil will be far easier to source with many more options. IMHO, there is no need to fear the warranty boogieman.
Just like Hyundai, everyone fears their warranty bark, and when I barked back with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act they folded their bully act. Just exceed the quality they ask for as far a certs, and really have we seen or heard of any manufacture void anything on viscosity differences? I think not. That 0-w8 would be out of my car the minute I would get home with the car. 0w-20 to start and then I would look for what the car speced for in Europe/Mideast.
