Hello everyone. I am new to the site but have been lurking for a while. I recently bought a 12' F150 with ecoboost and I need help picking an oil.

I came from owning a diesel and running shell rotella T6. I currently run Mobil 0w-30 in the wifes car. I plan on keeping my truck for years to come so I want a good quality synthetic that will make the motor last.

I am looking for an oil that can meet the following demands:
1. Quality synthetic
2. Function in temps from -30 to 110deg f
3. Will last 10k between changes ( approx mileage I run per year)
4. Will resist fuel dilution and help prevent condensation buildup ( i drive short trips in the truck)
5. It can be found fairly easy IE: Walmart or parts store
6. Wont break the bank

I have been looking at pennzoil platinium. Im sure I have read somewhere on here that it is a good oil to run in the ecoboost due to its ability to resist fuel dilution and evaporation. I have been looking for the thread but cant find it.

Thanks

I'd step up to the Pennzoil Ultra 5w-30. There have been a few recent UOAs showing it working well in turbo applications.

You're in the severe service category though. I don't think I'd run any oil for 10k annual intervals if most of your driving is short trips. That motor is already prone to fuel dilution. Short trips and cold temperatures are going to compound that. I'd change it every six months.

Thanks for the replys everyone.

I looked for the ultra at walmart yesterday and just saw the platinium plus. Something about it being made out of natural gas? It was $25/ 5quart jug

Ill call around for the ultra today.

I was trying to avoid multiple oil changes a year but If Its going to save the motor then ill do it.

Ill have to look in the manual for any specific ford specs.

There are a handful of Ecoboost UOAs in the 5k to 7k range here. The few I just looked were all showing fuel, and some at a severe level.

If you can find Ultra, that's a great option. About half of the Wal-Marts I've been to have it.

In your case, just change it in the fall and spring. Fifteen minutes twice a year isn't a big deal to keep that motor happy.

If I cannot find the ultra, will the platinium work just as well? Or should I look for another oil?

Platinum will be almost as good as Ultra. Mobil 1 is on par. Use any one of those three and you'll be happy

I agree with changing more often than once a year. It does seem these have an issue with fuel dillution, which is not uncommon with today's DI engines, you don't want to leave oil in there with too much fuel.

Labnerd on f150online forums is recommending 5k mile intervals max unless you get a UOA. He has access to a lot of UOAs and he advises that engine is beating up the oil. Go and read for yourself over there.

He and many others believe MC semi syn is the best for that application.

We've got a few members here who own ecoboost trucks, and have posted a few used oil analysis so I suggest searching and taking a look at what's been working best for them.
You've gotta take your driving habits and conditions into consideration with these engines and they need to be driven hard. Babying them seems to create problems.
As far as oil goes look for the ford spec and/or he Honda turbo spec since the Honda spec is a very tough one made for turbo coking prevention.
M1,platinum,ultra,qsud, all are quality products.

I'll go check that out. Thanks

Generally speaking, turbo'd engines will be a little harder on oil, and since the ecoboost has twins, then a respectable assumption would be to follow the aforementioned post of 5k.
