Hey folks have a 92 Eclipse 2.0 140k miles. Tried running 5w30, but the winter starts have been really crappy lots of valvetrain noise, and the oil consumption has been really high and my pistons and combustion chambers were dity, could be me EGR/PCV valves which i havent checked yet, but the oil consumption is still there. Right now im Running Valvoline W5-30 During my Auto-Rx cleaning phase. Can someone suggest an oil?
something in high 30 weight low 40 ?

Valvetrain noise on startup suggests a poor quality oil filter. If the anti-drainback valve leaks the filter will empty (if mounted horizontally or upward) and then it's like starting up after an oil change (takes a while to fill the filter before the oil is pushed to the top end).

If your filter dangles downward then the anti-drainback valve should not be an issue.

Sorry what i meant to say is that I was running Mobil M1 W5-30, its good oil just not for my car.
After switching to valvoline the noise went away.
Plus it was eating the M1 pretty fast

If you had an oil pressure gauge we could see how much pressure the 30 weight oil gives. If low, you could try 10w40 or thicken the 5w30. Mobil 1 is a tad on the thin side (some mix in one quart M1 15w50). In fact most of today's 30 weights are on the thin side compared to 15 or 20 years ago. So a thicker oil might to the trick. Might want to go with Maxlife and probably can get away with 10w30 in your area, which should be a tad thicker base oil. Or Maxlife synthetic is thicker than regular Maxlife.

Yeah switch from M1 to valvoline with the smae viscosity gave me much better oil pressure. Not trying to knock on the M1 its just not doing the trick for my engine.

I don't think it's fair to blame any strange noises on oil or filter when you are doing the Auto RX procedure. Could be related to the cleaning process.

If it isn't related to the cleaning process, maybe try a Wix filter. Some people get better startup noise with them. The above oil suggestions seem to be good ones, as well.

Sorry forgot to add this is my Daily driver and work car, I do alot of short trips in the city.

No the noises were there before the auto-rx

Why are you using a syn during an auto-rx?

The Anti-Drain Back Valve just keeps the oil/dirt from draining back into the oil pan if the filter is angled more than 90 degrees. The oil that is pumped throughout the engine comes from the larger hole in the center of the filter which is the clean side.
There have been a few people here that have experienced more noise using Mobil.

The oil filter itself may not agree with your engine, seriously.

There are some engines that are filter picky, and will make valvetrain noises.

No, he is now using Valvoline with A-RX. Before A-RX he was using M1 and it was causing the noises.

This can be added to many comments archived here of M1 causing noisier running and increased oil use. I've noticed it myself, though in all fairness the UOAs that result seem to be perfectly excellent.

I think running A-RX and a good dino will be a fine choice for your engine, although you could experiment with other syns as well after the treatment.

Could also try Mobil 1 0W-40. It might take care of both your problems. How close are you to Canada? Esso makes a 0W-40 also.

You may as well try a high mileage oil in that car. I had a 94 that I inherited from my wife, who owned it since new. Daddy always made sure she had Pennzoil 3000 mile OCI's. By 2002, the car was at about 90k miles and using about 1.5 quarts per 3k miles. I tried all sorts of combos and additives of this and that but high mileage oil is about the only thing that slowed the burn even a little.

Im close to canada but since I have a green card I get the anal cavity search every time I try to cross the border so thats out of the question. Thanks for your advice guys.

Who gives you a heard time? Canada?
Why would they care if you have a green card?
